1995 Subaru Legacy Logo

I have a 1995 Subaru legacy. While overtaking another vehicle, there was a loud noise, possibly a backfire and the engine died. I coasted to the side and had the car towed to a garage. I suspected a timing belt issue, so disassemble and realigned the belt and cams (dual over cams), but the engine still won't fire. It cranks, and occasionally backfires, but wont start. Any suggestions would be great.

Was the timing belt broken?

Are you sure the cams are aligned correctly?

If the belt was broken It may be wise to do a compression test. This should tell you if a valve has bent.

The timing belt was not broken. As for the correct alignment, I can only say the I took a lot of care in positioning everything. I replaced the water pump 6 months ago, which requires a timing belt removal and the car has been running great since then. So I think everything is aligned properly. I've been researching about cam sensors for the last hour...any possibility this could be involved?

Have you checked for spark? Fuel pressure? Injector pulse?

  • Anonymous Apr 05, 2013

Have not checked for any of these, as I got the belt back on last night and still wouldn't start, so left it for this morning. I'm not too good at diagnosing problems, so not too sure where to start. As stated in original post, I was passing a semi, the engine kicked the transmission down and then I believe I heard a backfire...could be mistaken....and engine died mid-pass and won't start. After checking timing belt (everything looks good, belt still in good shape) it seems as if it wants to start, turns over but won't fire. I've never checked for spark on a vehicle before, only a motorcycle as a kid. any tips on checking for the 3 items you recommended?

Pull off a plug wire, insert a spark tester, should see spark jump at least half an inch. Fuel pressure is a little mor tricky, you will need a rather eloborate fuel pressure gauge. If you have spark shoot a couple of shots of carb spray into the throttle body and try to start. If it starts you have a fuel issue.

SOURCE: Burning rubber smell from Subaru Legacy

Please have your exaust pipes checked, perhaps a mount is burning. The catalytic converter can make a nasty odor when it is clogged. Check the wear on the serpintine belt.

My 1995 subaru legacy wont idle after changeing timeing belt

If the vehicle was idling proper before timing belt replacement, it is possible the valve timing is not correct due to belt not being installed/lined up properly. If belt was changed because it was broken, chances are there is valve damage internal to the engine causing this issue

Load roaring sound 1995 subaru sound coming from back

Roaring noise from rear is a classic symptom of a rear wheel bearing beginning to fail. The noise is amplified thru the body and make an awful racket. The trick is figuring out which one is failing. Your mechanic may recommend replacing both sides if the vehicles mileage warrants it.

Constant whine when driving and wheels lock/skid in sharp turns

One way to track down the noise; since sound travels through metal its hard to pinpoint when driving in the car.
Jack all four wheels off the ground securely (preferably a lift) and run the car with the wheels spinning. Then, without dying, listen for the noise. The dealer can do it for you as well. But sounds like a bad differential.
