P0733, P0734 Codes pulled 3rd & 4th gear Incorrect ratio Short of replacing tranny what are the possible causes for these codes? The RPM Gauge works

  • shoufee Mar 06, 2009

Thank you for your prompt response. The car has 275,000 km I will check the input and output speed sensors and the wiring connected to them and report back. If this helps with the diagnoses of the damage, The car was being driven at 35 miles per hour put into neutral and then back into drive at about 3000 rpm

There are some sensors on the transmission that tend to go bad. You may also need to check the wiring. Could be a computer problem. How many miles?

BMW E46 ZF 5HP19 trouble code P1732 P0733 P0734. My car only has 110K miles, transmission fluid has just replaced. It was dark, dirty, not burned, has some sludge but no metal shavings. After driving for...

Yes, this could be the shift solenoid. Was the transmission filter changed at the same time as the fluid? Dirt in the system can affect some of the transmission sensors tripping Trouble codes. I cannot be sure what the P1732 code is as some codes can be very vehicle specific but it appears to refer to the transmission or on of it's sensors.

P0733 - Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio.
P0734 - Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio.

I have a 2009 Dodge Ram SLT 4x4 with 120,000.on a 4.7 engine. The check engine light illuminated. These are codes: P0935, P0733 and P0734. Any information on what they are and how to repair them ?

P0935 line pressure sensor circuit high
P0733 gear ratio error in 3rd
P0734 gear ratio error in 4th

Start with the P0935. Get a shop manual and test the circuit FIRST. Do NOT simply replace the sensor. If the wiring tests good, then test the sensor values with engine running. If the sensor is good, you've got an internal pressure problem that would cause the other two codes

I have a 2012 Dodge Avenger that is showing the codes P0732, P0733, P0734. The rpms go up even when not accelerating. And then it won't go into gear. When it's in Drive it's like its in Neutral.

Those codes indicate the PCM/TCM has determined an incorrect gear ratio for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear respectively. That's because it is comparing the signals from the input speed sensor and the output speed sensor on the transmission, and one or both of them is not providing an accurate signal. I would guess that one (or both) has failed and needs to be replaced.

I have a 1998 dodge Grand Caravan with codes P0700,P0734 & P0733. What does this mean?

P0700 is a informative transmission code, about some problem there; the P0733 and P0734 is the specific problem there.
I would first try changing the fluid and filter. Although the fluid may look like it is brand new, with 100K on the fluid, I can assure you that even if those miles were all highway at steady speed and no load that the fluid has deteriorated and no longer lubricating the internal parts properly and that there is some debris in the ******.If codes return and shifting problems are still present, there is definite internal failure, possibly the pump or in the clutches.
DTC P0733The powertrain control module (PCM) uses the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor, input speed sensor (ISS) and output speed sensor (OSS) to determine engine speed, input shaft speed and output shaft speed. These sensor readings are used to determine the current gear ratio and RPM slip across the torque converter. The PCM uses this information from the sensors to determine if the commanded gear matches the actual gear. During normal driving conditions, the PCM will adapt main line pressure via the pressure control (PC) solenoid to prevent slipping and harsh shifts. Shift solenoid 3 is used to apply or release third gear clutch. The PCM controls 3rd gear by controlling the ground for shift solenoid 3. The PCM will turn the solenoid OFF, open the driver circuit, when 3rd gear is commanded On to apply 3rd clutch. Shift solenoid 3 is supplied ignition voltage from the fuel pump relay whenever the PCM commands the fuel pump relay ON. DTC P0733 sets when 3rd clutch still slips after the PCM has commanded high main line pressure.DTC Parameters
DTC P0733 will set if the PCM detects an incorrect actual 3rd gear ratio when 3rd gear is commanded On when:- The condition exists for longer than 3 seconds (2001)*- The condition exists for longer than 3 seconds, 1 minute is allowed to elapse, then condition exists again for longer than 3 seconds (2000)- The high main line pressure has been commanded- The transaxle is in a forward gear- The input speed is greater than 224 RPM- The vehicle speed is greater than 5 km/h (3 mph)- The speed noise parameter = NO- The steady state ratio fail counter equals 255 for an in-gear failure, or the shift fail counter is greater than 100 on a downshift or upshift to 3rd gear (128=0 or normal operation)DTC P0733 diagnostic runs continuously once the above conditions have been met.
DTC P0733 is a type A DTC for 2000, type B for 2001.**Applicable to vehicles built after June 2000.
Diagnostic AidsImportant: If DTCs P0745, P0746, P0756, P0758, P0761, P0763, P0766, P0768 or P0789 is set, diagnose that DTC first. A diagnosed PC solenoid, shift solenoid 2, 3 or 4 low/high circuit fault DTC may have caused DTC P0733 to set.Important: If a shift solenoid performance DTC P0783, 4th gear stuck ON, is set, diagnose that DTC first. A 4th gear stuck ON may cause no 3rd gear, no 2nd gear, or TCC stuck Off.
Refer to Pressure Ports - Air Check and Parts Description for pressure apply points and for component/location description.
Possible causes of no 3rd gear are listed in the flowchart on the succeeding page.
Verify TRANSMISSION ISS and TRANSMISSION OSS read correctly on Scan tool.
Make sure the pressure control, shift 2, shift 3 and shift 4 solenoids are not intermittently sticking. A sticking shift solenoid 4 may cause 4th gear to be applied from an initial start resulting in no 3rd gear. Audible sound should be similar for all solenoids. A muffled tone indicates the need for replacement.

P0734 refer at ratio 4 gear, and the rocedure is the same.
Hope helps.

Code po734, po735

This is what your codes mean:

Trouble Code-P0734 (A/T Additional Gear Ratio Error In Fourth Gear)

Trouble Code Conditions:
Vehicle driven to a speed of 4-37 mph at more than 500 rpm, gear selector in 4th Gear in Drive, and the PCM detected too much difference in the engine speed and output shaft speed.

Possible Causes:

  • Customer may complain of intermittent 4th gear operation
  • O/D and 2/4 pressures less than 75 psi
  • O/D or 2/4 clutch volume indexes out of specification
  • O/D accumulator seals are damaged
  • Transmission enters "limp in" mode running in 4th gear

Trouble Code-P0735 (A/T Gear Ratio Error Fourth Prime)

Trouble Code Conditions:
Vehicle driven any forward Gear, and the TCM detected the ratio of the Input speed to the Output Speed did not match the current Gear Ratio (this test can take up to 5 minutes).

Possible Causes:

  • Related Gear Ratio trouble codes may be stored (note that some of these Gear Ratio trouble codes may be intermittent)
  • Transmission has internal problems or damage present
You have a transmission problem.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't shift out of first gear and the fault codes are P0733 and P0734.

P0733=Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio
P0734=Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio,
your transmission is in "limp" mode,
Have the following sensors checked on the transmission, input sensor, output sensor, and speed sensor.
The transmission is not getting a signal from one of them,So it doesn't know how fast your going so it doesn't up shift.

98 voyager is in limp mode, codes p0733 and p0734 are third and fourth gear ratio error. had one person say the input and output speed sensor on tranny are bad. another said the pin that holds the band on...

It's neither. That trans does not have a band. If you had only one gear ratio error it could possibly be speed sensor but not 2. Sounds like either shaft broke inside or sun gear.
