SOURCE: I have a 2000 GMC

I think you'll find sender & pump are all one assy. What is the reason for changing. If it's the gauge, have you removed, cleaned contacts & re-attached wire plug at pump/sender assy, to see if it would cure your problem? Personally, it's not something I'd want to do twice in a short time, so if I was replacing one (if parts are available to do so) I'd replace the other, unless difference in price was extreme.

SOURCE: Location of coolant temperature sensor on 2003 GMC

If you are getting the low coolant message you are looking for the coolant level sensor not the coolant temp sensor. I do believe the sensor is in the jug, is it filled to the full line?

Your engine coolant temp sensor is a two wire sensor.
The temp sending unit for temp gage is a different animal, one wire connector.

1990 gmc K1500 5.7L, temp. gauge not working:

To review, you have two temp sensors, one for the gauge on the dash and one for the computer. If you unplug the sensor for the computer the reading will be minus 30 degrees or over 300 which will make it very hard to start. Unplugging the sensor for the gauge would have no effect on the computer.
According to the wiring diagram, the wire for the temp gauge is green, and the wires for the temp sensor for the computer are yellow and black.

Hello: You can do the following, Get a infrared temp sensor and check the temperature of the radiator and if it shows hot then remove the radiator and take it to a radiator shop and have it flow checked. If its not flowing properly that would make it run hot.
