I have an automatic 93 Nissan Altima. Occasionally it would not start and I would have to play with the shifter (sliding it back and forth, as well as pressing the shift button multiple times to start). Always got power, just wouldn't crank unless I toyed with the shifter.
Last week I unplugged the battery neg and replaced my spark plugs, fired up the first attempt but then would not crank again after that until I moved it into neutral position. Then it fired up. After driving and starting in neutral for the day, it finally began starting out of park once again.
three days later I drove home and after a couple hours it would not start. Gets all the power it always had to the dash, but my usual ''shifter'' tricks were not working. (NOTE: I have also had problems with the ignition switch. My radio and wipers would not work unless I gently turned the key back toward ''on'', I would here a click in the connection and the radio/wipers then have power).
I have done some browsing online and discover that it could be the solinoid, neutral/park safety switch or need for adjustment (thought it will not start in any gear), connector attached to positive battery cable (corrosion).
One last thing... I toyed with the wiring around the steering column thinking that it could be the ignition switch, also tried to get to the guts of the shifter... it suddenly started, but would not start again after i turned it off.
Checked all fuses, checked battery connection, new alternator (18 months old).

Have gotten it to start twice, but once I kill it, it won't restart. Has no trouble starting when it actually cranks - sounds like it's getting power.
UPDATE: Ignition switch is good, could there be a problem with the housing that holds the ignition switch? is that the "ignition barrel"?
I also cleaned out some overly corroded positive battery connections... i pulled the Park/Neutral relay and the #2 prong looks burnt (tinted more than the rest), but the continuity between the #2 and corresponding prong wasn't affected by the tint.
My guess now is down to five things... 1) bad neutral safety switch (I know it's not an adjustment issue), 2) bad solenoid, 3) bad battery (although there is no clicking)/OR alternator, 4) bad relays somewhere along the way, 5) something with the spark plugs since I just replaced them shortly before the problem reoccurred.
Any thoughts given the above symptoms in previous posting?
I also have a 93 altima and am currently having the same clicking sound coming from the mid front dash (behind radio) I believe it t be the park/neutral safety solinoid, i think its probably catching a short that usually makes my rear passenger window roll up and down by itself unless i lock the child passenger window locks, which i believe is caused by me removing the power seatbelt and leaving the wiring as is. Did you previously have any shorts in your wiring? The sound it makes is the sound i usually hear when i start the car or when i apply the brake to shift from park. Has to be the solenoid?????
