When working properly, there is a light sensor 'telling' the instrument panel to switch from a daylight illumination pattern (bright orange readouts) to a more night-friendly dimmer orange readout with a relaxing blueish background.
Recently, my instrument panel won't switch from a daytime to a nightime pattern. WHY? This is so annoying. Moreover, I plan to sell the car for I need a pickup truck and I wouldn't want to pay CAD$75 an hour to my local Mazda dealership so change what is probably just a sensor...
Besides, with proper guidance, I can fix most things myself.

As long as all fuses are good, you need to check the light switch its self. Remove the light switch assembly from the dash. With a 12 volt circuit tester, check the wiring coming out of the switch. The dash lights will be powered along with the side marker lights.
Probe each wire that joins the switch, turning the switch on and off. If you don't have any loss of power here, it can be at the printed circuit board at the dash.

you need to replace the dash cluster, their failure is common at about 10 years of age

Since replacing anything could cost hundreds of dollors, would you really replace it from a suggestion or would you prefer to get it diagnosed properly. It gets expensive when you just throw parts at a car. This really need to be diagnosed properly ( hands on with the proper equipment).
