1990 Grand Prix starts but doesnt run no power stumbles dies

1990 grand prix 3.1 car originally stumbled when transitioning from acceleration to cruise and would stutter real bad, I had to either punch through it or let off the accel. and come back on it slowly. Then while driving fast down the freeway the car lost engine power but was still running could control steering just no power. Stopped and tried to restart etc.. would start and idle rough then just die upon accel.. Came back approx. 18 hours later and she started fine and ran good, not much stutter like before drove a few times nice and easy but also got up to 55-60mph. Then today I go to get on the freeway and BAM! she goes dead again did't get much past 60 if at all, had to giver and llittle to gain speed when it happened. Now she just sits. What should I do.xx

Pulled codes manually came up with 33 and 35 map sensor and idle air control. Would driving near 100mph cause one of these to fail. Also I had it running good for a couple days around town after this then today trying to get on the freeway and it still wont run. Starts idles rough eventually dies, give it gas dies immediately. Just went back to check on it

Check vacuum line for cracks this could be show MAP sensor.Or replace MAP.

car idles rough, I can put it in drive and it will move only around idle speed 5mph as soon as i give it gas idle or in drive it dies. Could that be a piston not firing, how to test it. Is there a starting poit or do I check all the suspects randomly, i.e. plugs, wires, coils packs, etc.?? Any insight would be great

    I tell you catalytic converter.

if I disconnect it will it run?

  • Anonymous Apr 05, 2013

it seems as if the catalytic converter was removed at some point and a straight pipe was welded in its place

sounds like you have a vacuum leak, check all the vacuum hoses and replace any broken or kinked ones, also check around the intake manifold gasket for leaks. any air leaks after the air flow meter creates 'un-metered' air which inturn will make the car run rough and stall, hope this helps

2002 pontiac grand prix hesitation/ stumble on moderate acceleration and/or up hill . wide open throttle it goes just fine. no codes. idles just fine. no other symptoms. just bought car a couple weeks ago...

Sounds like dirty, or partially clogged injectors. Have you run some fuel system cleaner through your gas tank? This is the least costly approach. Try 2 bottles in a full tank. Next could be dirty throttle body and or clogged air filter...no reference to mileage? Again these are small fixes you can attempt yourself. Read the instructions on a can of injector cleaner spray, and spray into your throttle body unit. You will need to completely remove the large inlet hose to gain access to spray...Hope this helps.

To reset "CHANGE OIL" light, turn the ignition switch to the run position without starting the engine. Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds. and wait for the light to flash. Check your manual it maybe slightly different. Real easy fix.

Engine tends to stumble when idling.

Have the vehicle scanned. Autozone will do this for free.
