Ok it idles way to high when acclerating and when in park....then it often has this jerking motion sometimes it light and sometimes its heavy...it started not happening that much but after driving for sometime i noticed that jerking is more frequent and a little harder...the engine was just replaced by a used one and prior to it going into the shop for this the car never did this jerking thing......i can also hear the engine like whistling or whining when accelerating, after im at a certain speed, and while im sitting at a light .......just don't remeber being able to hear this noise prior to my car getting the engine replaced.....then once i turn the car off i can hear this tinkering sound ticking sound and the car smells hot yet the thingy inside doesnt say the car is hot its right in the middle please help

Hi, I had the same problem. Nothing showed up on the "machine" but the Toyota mechanic replaced the idle control valve. It was pricey but it fixed it.

SOURCE: 2003 toyota highlander. when starting it wont maintain idle.
Try to adjust the idle of the truck because there is a possibility the idle is low and if still not work put the gear in neutral and then start it and step on the gas pedals for 20 sec.

SOURCE: My car jerks while changing gears
Hi,
Thanks for contacting Fixya.com
Poor acceleration is because the engine timing is wrong i.e. the ignition is early or late.
A flashing check engine light means that something serious is wrong with the vehicle and you should not be driving it. Being that the vehicle sputters and jerks under acceleration, it is assumed that you have a failure in your ignition system. Always have the car scanned when your check engine light comes on to obtain diagnosetic computer codes. Most common failure is basic maintenance items, Spark plugs and wires. Simple enough to replace, and relativly cheap. Ignition coils, ignition module, and crankshaft sensor would also cause a severe misfire. again... both pretty simple to change, but these items cost more. Start by having the vehicle checked with a scan tool first.
Aloso check distributor timing and next timing belt depending on year and how many miles on this car you may need to replace the timing belt it can be a cause too.
Let us know if you have something more to know else please accept the suggestion.
Thank You.
