Rough running, erratic spark

2000 ford ranger 3.0 done alot of testing and so far have removed and test injectors, blocked off the EGR port to check for operation, replaced IAC motor, changed plugs and wires, replaced coil pack. still engine misses.....used a timing light to determine that there is and eratic spark to 4 of the six cylinders. checked the crank sensor next and every thing checks out OK. Still the engine is setting no codes! at a loss now!

Compresion was equal across all cylinders. This seems to be a spark issue.

  • crjrcr Mar 05, 2009

Yes, Replaced them and the wires also.

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2014

Battery and alternator all checked out fine. Changed coil pack and cam sensor. Still struggles to turn over and no spark. Load tested Battery and Alt. Both are perfect.

After replacing the IAC Valve the check engine light is on and after removing the key the engine continues running for about 2 full minutes, Need Help!

Run a compression test on the cylinders. If reading is low on any drop a little engine oil into the pot. If compression rises you have compession ring problems. Remove all plugs before you try this and place leads away from engine.

You've done a great job of trouble shooting thus far. I would certainly suspect the injector after all of that. But, I didn't see anything about you replacing the spark plug itself. I would try that first as a crack in the insulator (even hairline) will cause mis-fires. If the spark plug doesn't fix the mis-fire, it cold be caused by a bad fuel injector, bad signal (like a loose harness or bad wire) to the fuel injector, or a leak or valve issue on that cylinder.

I have a 1992 Ford Ranger that runs perfect sometimes then will lose power and stall occaisionally. I done a complete tune-up, replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the injectors with two types cleaner and...

You haven't tuned anything. Tune-ups went away in 1980 with the introduction of electronics.
Fuel filter -filters fuel
Injector cleaner-waste of money,on some fords, it will remove the coating on pintle and is not recommended
TPS Sensor, was replaced after you tested it ,and found it defective?
Spark Plugs-ever hear of one failing. Never seen one fail in 47 years.

Have you considered the EGR Valve,Vacuum Leaks,Old O2 Sensors,again,test first,then replace,blocked converter?

You replace alot of things but you should replace the EGR valve and the throttle positioning valve also. I would start with the EGR valve
