92 300zx TT starter takes 2 tries all of a sudden. 1st try the teeth give a grinding sound and does not engage . 2 nd try works. This has only now started happening and I want to fix or correct the issue. Battery good,. Does something need oiling or is the starter crapping out. Car has only 86,000km, but is 21 years old and garaged since new.

you have to keep in mind that the starter is exposed to extreme heat and after that many miles it's natural for the parts to fail. considering that the vehicle has 200,000km this is not a sign of poor design of parts but just a typical symptom of longevity. just get it replaced as well as the battery and you should be fine.......please rate this

floridaguy87: if I am understanding you correctly, you want instructions on how to remove and install the starter in your 1995 Nissan Maxima. If this is the case, HERE GOES:
1. Tools you will need for the job: #6 phillips screw driver, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm combination wrenches, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm (3/8ths drive) sockets, 6 inch (3/8ths drive) extension and a (3/8ths drive) ratchet. It's 1:oo Am and I'm not at my shop, so I can't go and look at a car to check for sure, but I'm pretty sure I've got it covered.
2. Always disconnect the Negative battery cable. Make sure you place it in a manner that will keep it from accidentally falling back and hitting the battey again.
Special note, either take a few pictures of the air cleaner with the hoses attached or label thm, mark the or come up with some sort of reference to eliminate ay questions as to what goes where when you reassemble everything. Read these instructions over fully before going to task.
3. Remove the Air cleaner assembly. You should do this leaving the hoses ans Air mass sensor on the air cleaner assembly. Disconnect the large hose at the throttle body and try to break it loose by rotating it slightly, NOT BY PULLING on it first. Always try to rotate hoses on their fittings first to break them loose before trying to pull them off. If they won't rotate, they won't pull off either!
There are other hoses connected the to hoses going to the aircleaner and the big hose which leads to the throttle body. Becareful in removing them. CAUTION!!!!!!!! The big hose which is for the Air Mass sensor, as it ages, will get dried out and can easily crack and split, so handle it with extreme care!!!!!! Note, there may be bolts inside the air cleaner housing holding it to the inner fender.
4. Once you have the aircleaner off, the starter is right there in front of you, you take the 12mm wrench and remove the nut which holds the positive battery to the starter solinoid. Be careful, rotate the nut counter clockwise. Do not apply a lot of force, you WILL crack the plastic on the solinoid. Disconnect the smaller wire which pulls off.
Some if the connectors require a little latch part to be pinched in order to release them from the part you are pulling the wire from.
5. There are only two bolts which hold the starter onto the bell housing. Usually the bolt requires a 14mm socket to remove them.
These bolts are fairly tight, so be ready to pull hard if need be,
Again, the bolts loosten up counter clock wise.
Remove the bolts and the starter will nearly or will fall out. Always break both bolts loose first and then remove the bolt which is on the side you can't see. Then remove the final bolt. In this fashion, you have better control of how and when the starter comes off.
6. Make sure you compare the parts before you install them.
Then with one bolt in hand, put the starter up in place and put the bolt in the hole you can see, threading it by hand, while supporting the starter. Once it is in a ways, you can put the other bolt in place. If you can not reach the hole with the bolt by hand, put the bolt in the socket and use the extension to reach the bolt into place. Again, therad it in as far as you can by hand. Most of the time, you can thread the bolts all the way in and all you need to do is tighten them with the ratchet. The starter will have one nut loose on the back of it, which is the same location as the one you loostened to remove the battery cable from on the old starter.
Remove the nut and the washer and place the cable end onto the solinoid in about the same position as the one you removed. Put the washer back on followed by the nut. Then us the box end of the wrench to tighten the nut up. Remember, you tighten it too much and you will break the plastic. Usually, when you tichten it, the lock washer, will flaten and it will be tight enough. You should not be able to "LIGHTLY" I stress that point, wiggle the cable up and down, it should be tight. Reconnect the smaller wire and then reassemble the everything in the reverse as you had taken it apart.
