You need to remove the head and replace the head gasket.
If you do not know how to do this then get a mechanic to fix your engine.

I can think of two possible causes:
1 - Assuming you are getting spark at the plugs, the distributor may be reinstalled 180 deg off.
2 - Unlikely but - Assuming you are getting fuel into the cylinders, the fuel injector connectors were reinstalled improperly and are firing out of sequence. If you are not getting fuel into the cylinders, it's something else.

It could be: clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, or the cutoff switch. Could be fuel pump relay. It's in the engine compartment fues block, and labeled "Fuel Pump"

If it's either the filter or the pump, replace both at the same time, it's cheaper.

The fuel cutoff in located in the trunk, along the driver side rear fender, you have to pull all the carpeting and such out on that side to get to it. It's marked "Fuel cutoff" Not sure on the 626, you might just have to push the reset button on the module.

However I doubt this is your problem I would think it's either the relay, the filter or pump.

I had a similar sounding problem: my '02 626 would turn over but not start and I know my solution will sound strange but it worked. To start with I had a 4.5 year-old battery and I cranked on the starter until the battery started dying. I then left the car in my driveway overnight and the next afternoon, when I had time, I hooked it up to my battery charger (set on 'fast charge' ) and I pulled off one of the spark plug wires and tried to ground it then had my 17 year-old turn the starter over to see if we had any spark reaching the plugs. The car then started! While I was holding a spark plug wire in my hand! I replaced the battery that night and have not had a problem since (about 4 weeks ago). How old is your battery? Take it to a parts store that does battery diagnosis and have 'em check it out... It may just be your culprit.

this could be a case of carbon debris in the throttle body plates and idle air control chambers...simply might just need serviced/cleaned...pull air intake off throttle body and spray with a good throttle body cleaner spray including the idle air ports. Ive also seen motor mounts cause this as this is more of a vibration felt in gear

Overheated and loss compression.

The most common cause is a blown head gasket and sometimes a warped head. Someone would need to remove the cylinder head and have it checked for damage, then replace the head gasket.

It may be any number of things, but here's just a few:

1) Cam shaft position sensor incorrectly fitted or wiring faulty.
2) Compression incorrect due to over-skimming of the head.
3) Incorrect timing chain placement and/or faulty valve timing.

I have just bought a 1990 Mazda 626 which has overheated.There seems to be no compression even though the camshaft and valves are working.Could the rings be damaged?

They could but the most likely culprit will be a bad head gasket and/or a warped head. Aluminum doesn't take extreme heat well. Hope this helps.

97 model 626 will run fine then when warm will not start is getting feul and has good spark

Your problem is either lack of compression which is due to piston rings worn and having more than 4thou per inch per bore which when cold compression could be 100PSI but when the engine gets hot and expands and all metal parts do then compression could be down to 85 to 90 psi and you havent enough **** to **** in the fuel to burn and run, OR the engines is getting to hot . or the head gasket might be blowing slight compression into the cooling system which will cause the same.

On start up I get lots of white smoke this lasts until car warms to normal operating temperature, car is using a little oil have noticed oil spitting from exhaust, no obvious sign that the head, head...

Stage one of a blown head gasket is a pin hole leak. As time goes by the hole(s) get bigger.
I will start traking the coolant lost and oil lose.
From the time you stop your engine to the next morning,there can be slow leakage between the coolant passage and the cyclinder end of the head gasket.
This is one possiblilty of lots of white smoke in AM.
Small amount is normal but large amount of smoke is a call for a professional check up.
To pin point a blowing headgasket you will need
1)coolant system compression tester
or
2)chemical reaction test for combustion test gas
If it's the org. engine from 1997,with over 110,000 then blowning headgasket is a good possiblity.
Drive it to the shop and let the pro to do the coolant pressure test and combustion gas test.
A full head gasket job with head re-surface (if it can be re-use) is worth it.
Shop around on well estiblished independent shops.
Fix the blown head gasket at the first stage of failure can safe you thousand on a head replacement.

My '99 Cougar heated up the other day and when i parked and popped the hood some gray smoke came out. Now the car over heats a lot and the heater will only blow cold air out

Possible blown head gasket...sounds like it, remove the spark plugs and do a compression test, sometimes you will find water coming out of the spark plug hole with a blown head gasket, pull the plugs and turn the engine over, with the radiator full of water, if water starts spitting out of any of the spark plug holes...it's a cracked head, or blown head gasket.

Engine runs but has steam coming out of exhaust pipe

The ONLY way coolant can get into the crankcase is through a crack in the cylinder head, block, or head gasket. THE ONLY WAY!.

Checking compression was a good idea, and you've confirmed that is not where the leak is. It could be somewhere else within a head, the block, or head gasket.

Any gasoline engine will blow steam from the exhaust pipe on start-up and a few minutes running. May even stink, depending on how sensitive your nose is to smell.

I think your going to have to dig deeper into this, if you truly had coolant in the oil. But to tell you exactly where to look is not going to be easy.
