1988 dodge caravan steering wheel is loose down to where it tilts how do i get to to where its loose it rocks left to right

the only switch that you need to remove is the signal switch and hazard button that are held with screws.the hazard button has a screw(in the button)that holds the button to the side of the switch and the signal switch is held by 3 screws that you should see looking down at the switch.the one screw you will have to turn the switch to either left or right signal to gain access to it.disconnect the switch connection under the dash so you can pull up the switch to gain more access to the system.you will have to remove the ignition switch,with the key in there should be a small hole in the housing that you push a small pick or pin or drill into to push up the lock tab to remove the ignition switch.then you can continue.

Actually this is most likely a mechanical issue if you had to move a lever to adjust it. If it is one of those that is supposed to adjust at the push of a button to saved settings then it is a solenoid. I doubt you have this in the caravan though. You will need to open up the steering column so you can access the locking lever and gears that the teeth of that lever lock into. Most likely either the teeth or or the bracket they lock into have become damaged or loose causing your problems.

the tilt steering wheels get loose from people using the wheel to assit them in and out of the vehicle, it is a very common problem and it is from the tilt bolts coming loose inside, if you do not have a lot of mechanical experience i dont recommend doing this your self, there are some special tools required and know how but if you can get your hands on a service mannuel then all you have to do is take the steering column apart from the wheel down to the tilt bolts and put some red lock tite on them and retighten them down

try rocking the van back and fourth to see you can get the steering to unlock...GOOD LUCK

Try wiggling the steering wheel left and right as you turn the key - sometimes the steering wheel lock can stop the key from turning if there is pressure on it.

You need to remove the steering wheel all the way down to the directional switch to gain access to tighten up the tilt housing set screws

Sounds like a pivot point backed out. Take it apart and inspect. Something will be obvious, likely on the right side.

You mean the steering wheel is rocking back and forth? I hope, because if it is slipping left and right, it is not the wheel but the steering control arm, Or something else down under the car. To get to the wheel, take off the horn, I don't think you have airbags, a couple screws in the back should do it, then get to the nut, torque that thing up, you should be all set. Hope this helps.

try pushing the agjustment level back once you get the steering wheel where you want it ,, the spring that does that could be broken

No,the steering wheel has to come off,and the bearing is loose,to tighten the teering back up,it has to be dissasembled.
