I suggest replacing your MODULATOR VALVE on the transmission. This valve, under pressure from the engine, controls how the vehicle shifts. It is possible that the valve is good, and you just have a leak in the rubber hose that connects to the valve. I have not heard any issues from the 02' Nissan Altima about the transmission. If the valve is disconnected from the hose, you should notice some smoke either from the transmission, or under the hood by the exhaust.(NOT ALWAYS NOTICEABLE) Second, the automatic transmission has several internal components, that if one fails, can cause a cascade of issues. The TORQUE CONVERTER under cyntrifical force, converts the power from your engine, into a hydrolic pump that feeds the transmission. If this becomes clogged, the transmission will not shift correctly. A transmission flush might cure your shifting issue. During the flush, replace the transmission filter. As if his is clogged for any reason, it will not supply enough fluid to the transmission, and could cause permanent damage to the transmission.I hope this helps. Good luck.

That means the transmission is going into Limp mode - something's wrong that is making the car believe it can be damaged by the speeds the upper gears will allow you to reach. For starters, check the fluid level (or just change it - it's not a bad idea), and disconnect the battery for an hour or so to put the ECU into relearn mode - this will clear current fault codes and allow you a fresh start to see if the condition reappears, or if it was a fluke failure of some part that caused the car to repeatedly go into limp mode.

SOURCE: 1998 nissan altima gxe -ignition problem

Hi what is happening is that your turn off your car and left the wheels turned to one side and specially if your car is parke in a hill what you have to do is to force the steering wheel to the same direction of your wheels this will free up the ignition switch it is going to be hard let me tell you but it will work and this is why your shift don't work once you have the ignition switch free then your shift will work again

SOURCE: 2002 Altima engine won't start, but key does turn in the ignition

Is there a clicking sound? The first thing that I would check is to make sure that the starter motor is getting voltage. If it is getting voltage then I would say that the motor is bad and needs to be replaced. If it is not getting voltage then it could be a bad fuse, relay, or a bad ground. All of these are probabilities. The last thing that I would check for is a bad ignition switch especially since the accessories come on.

Either your rack and pinion has gone out or your power steering pump is bad, or out of fluid.
As you stand in front of you car with the hood open, look down and to the left. You are looking for the pwer steering pump resevior. It will have 2 hoses coming out of it and a cap that has a picture of a steering wheel.
Open that and you can check the fluid.
Please let me know what you find.

My 2002 Altima SL 2.5 drives and shifts fine for an hour or so. Then it won't shift from first gear.

In spite of what Firestone did it still sounds like you have a defective speed sensor. Other people have also had this problem and it was solved by replacing the speed sensor.

I hope it resolves your problem.

My 2005 Altima gear shift gets stuck in Drive and I can't shift to Reverse or Park. It happens only occassionally. If I sit there and fiddle with it for a few minutes it eventually shifts, but I know...

in order for the shift lock solenoid to release a stop lamp signal must be received. the 2 most common causes of an intermittent inop. shift lock solenoid would be (1) intermittently the stop lamps do not work (stop lamp switch, etc.) or (2) intermittently the shift lock solenoid receives power but does not operate (bad solenoid). There are certainly other possible causes but I'd begin by confirming the stop lamps turn on when the shift lock does not release. Hope this helps

I have a nissian bluebird 1996 automatic car. just recently noticed that when you start and drive as soon as the car is changing its first gear it sort of changes gear with force and you could feel...

well if the shifts are all late then they may feel rough. This could be caused by a bad throttle psition sensor and this common on nissians. If the shifts are times correctly and you feel a slide - bang in 2nd then this is usually the beginning of the end.

When I first start driving the transmission work fine ,then when I slow down it shifts into 2nd. and won't shift up again. So i stop the car , start it again and then it shifts fine again until I slow down...

I was told by a Chrysler tech that it's the shift solenoid located in the trans. pan. There are 4 of them and you have to have it checked to see which one. You don't want to replace all 4. About $80.00 at a dealer! Mine does the same thing. 2004 Concorde lxi.

MY TRANS WONT SHIFT INTO THIRD GEAR UNTIL IM DOING 45 MPH IT SHIFTS FINE IN FIRST AND SECOND GEAR WHEN IT IS IN SECOND GEAR AND WONT SHIFT TO THIRD I CAN PUT IT IN N AND BACK TO OVERDRIVE THEN IT SHIFTS.

Most likely your shift cable (from the selector to the transmission) is worn, maybe needs lubrication. Mine had a similiar problem, but had to shift it into neutral and back up to get it in reverse. A new shift cable solved the problem.
