I have a 2000 XK8. It starts and runs great most of the time, but has begun to give me problems starting from time to time. I turn the key and get no crank at all--just silence--but I do get power to the guages and accessories. It sounds like a starter or neutral safety switch issue, but my mechanic is reluctant to go the expense of pulling the starter on the chance that this is the problem and he says that he's checked the safety switch. He kept it for a month, drove it 400 miles and couldn't get it to not start. I got it back Thursday and twice over the weekend it wouldn't start. The first time it started after a few minutes and four or five tries. The next time it took a little longer, but finally started. Anyone had this issue before? Any ideas? Thanks.
Are you parked with the front of the car uphill, and the mechanic parked flat or downhill? It could be fuel draining by gravity back from the engine to the gas tank...and may be a fuel pump reverse leakage problem. I seem to have a similar slight delay in starting in the morning, as my driveway has a slight uphill grade, but I have no troubles after driving for awhile or parked in a flat area at work at the end of the day. [Heard something similar proposed by the Magiozzi brothers on CarTalk on NPR once. - so this is a speculation]. Regards - MHH
Sounds like an ignition switch to me...
