I have had a problem with My 93 Polo. Here's the story...
Last weekend it wouldn't start, it wasn't turning at all, just "clunk" when turning the ignition.
I managed to get it started by rolling her down the hill. It was then put on charge overnight.
In the morning I went to start it after it had been charged but had the same problem.
I went to the local garage and it turned out that my battery was dead and wasn't holding charge,"fair enough" I thought and bought a new one. The alternator was tested and was doing its job.
I drove it around happily on that Sunday and again going to work on the Monday morning, however when I was leaving work it wouldn't start again!
Took it back to the garage and had the battery and alternator checked again. Fine!
I abandoned my car for a week until last night when I thought I'd take it for a test drive. Everything was going fine until I put my foot down to accelerate and the power seemed to immediately vanish. I crawled back home at 10mph and had a look under the bonnet. I took the air filter cover of and discovered that there was a thick creamy substance in the air filter and also in the carburettor.
Any ideas?
To sum up the problems...
Problem starting
Thick creamy substance in carb and air filter
Also over-heating
Recently had a new catalytic conv if it makes any difference.

If you pull out the dipstick you will find this is also white, which is water in your oil. More than likely cyllinder head gasket.You will probably find it in your water bottle as well

you might want to have the head gaskets looked at that means you are getting water in the oil it has nothing to do with short trips oil should be a brownish color no matter what or black when it gets too thin doe the car idle rough or have any white smoke ?

if it not losing water then its not a head gasket... i have the same problem and its from condensation... mazda has complaints but not enough for a recall... they have a new dipstick that is available and it is supposed to stop the problem

theres no water, theres no coolant, no cracked block, theres no problem, it is normal for an rx8 (for that matter a rotary engine) to have some white foam on the dipstick. all it is is oil being thrown about by the rotors all over the chambers and foaming up, there is nothing to worry about, its just oil. it is more noticeable in 04-05 models and if you so desire you can go to a mazda dealership and the will install baffles into your oil pan or a new one that is updated to help prevent this because they redesigned it after 05.

this isusually caused by a mixtur of oil and water condesating from the heat of the engine
with engine off, pull oi; dipstick and check color of oil
if oil is same color as condensation, u have water in oil and there is a problem
if oil is proper color or black if its dirty,then the condensation is just normal
some engines get it,some dont

Is this the head gasket as I have noticed the engine overheating and coolant going down quite quickly some times?
if so, how much will this cost at a standard garage in the uk?

before some one whips your cylinder head off thier is a head tester which sits on your expansion bottle it then changes colour if the head gasket has gone
