2003 chrysler town and country speedometer quit working

Replace speedometer sensor and it still doesn't work. any suggestions.

  • nochi1 Mar 02, 2009

the transmission works fine. the tachometer also works fine. the only problem is that the needle on the speedometer doesn't move at all, the lights all come on fine.

  • nochi1 Mar 10, 2009

Had a computer scan done. I had replaced the speedometer output sensor (there is also an input sensor). When the computer scan came out fine, we noticed that the speedometer needle itself was on the wrong side of the little bar that it rests on. A wire was inserted to bring the needle back on the correct side of the bar and now the speedometer works fine. The output sensor was probably faulty but the speedometer needle just needed be pulled back to it's original position. Thanks for your help.

It is the speedometer that doesn't work? What problem do you have? Does the transmission shift or is it stuck in 2nd?

You need to have someone with access to a computer scanner drive your van with the scanner on it. But if the transmission and the cruise work it is likely a bad speedo head

Great. Glad you were able to fix it and didn't have to spend the money on a new one. But, can I have a little better rating on this because it was a defective speedo head, you were just able to fix it. I wasn't able to physically look at it to see that.

How did you get the wire into the dash to pull it back?

Nevermind I figured it out. slid a twist tie through the hole for the tripmeter

Speedometer just stop working

Generally there are two reasons that keep a speedometer from working. Either the Sensor in the transmission has failed of the speedometer head itself is no good. The spped sensor can be purchased at most Automotive stores and installed relatively easy. I always suggest trying this first because its the cheapest. You can also purchase one from the junk yard however I don't recommend this unless you are just wanting to save a few bucks and use it for a test part. If you replace the sensor and the speedometer still fails to work then chances are it the head and then you can either purchase another from the dealer or the junk yards. However make sure that you note the original miles and the change.

Speedometer not working in a 2003 town and contry minvan

hi
this may because of the following reasons
1.the pick up sensor sensing the spped may be damages so please try replacing it.
2.the wire which is sending the signal to the speedo meter may be damaged so please check the wire and replace if nesessary.
3.the speedometer itself may be the problem so service the speedometer or replace with the new one.
4.the terminal to which the wire connecting the speedometer may be damaged so check it.

I have a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country. The speedometer quit working. It has quit once before but came back on its own. The odometer is working.

Bad instrument cluster. Common problem try getting used from wrecking yard. Verify by checking for cruise control operation. If cruise works the cluster has failed.

2003 chrysler town & country speedometer stuck

sit in the drivers seat close the door. with the key off hold the trip odometer button in then while holding the button in turn the key on. if done correctly this will put the MIC (mechanical instrument cluster) into a self test. if the speedometer does not move like the rest of the gauges during this test the MIC must be replaced. if the speedometer does move it is likely your problem will be fixed, however, if the speedometer does move but it does not start working properly then further diagnostic will be needed.

The speedometer quit working on a 2001 town and country. I replaced the output sensor, but it still doesn't work. The check engine light is not on.... Any suggestions???

Try pressing the trip odometer reset button for 5 seconds. It will flash2.gif an error code. Then the odometer lights will flash, a bunch of error codes2.gif flash. Let it finish.

I found this on fixya before, and it worked for my van. I didn't replace anything.
