They have an automatic tensioner, like a spring loaded pulley. They are usually quite easy to pull back using a power bar or spanner. For the routing diagram, click here

I replaced the battery in January for my Isuzu

In today vehicle there are many electronic device that still draw power from the battery.

Example:
Car radio memory on station pre-set
Car radio clock
Computer/ECU to save driving parameters
Car alarm + sensors
Power seat menory

To prevent problem,I will start the engine for 5 minutes once a week.

If are in an enclose area and has access to a power outlet then it's a good idea to connect a float battery charger to keep the battery is optimal condition.

Here is a sample of float charger / battery tender.

It's on sale for $7.99 now or you can but better quality one at your local auto part store for $30+

It's a good idea to check for worn belt and weak alternator.

A belt with 60,000 or 5 years should be replace.

Check the voltage at the battery terminal after the engine is warm up for 5 minutes. The voltage should be above 13.8V

Auto supply store may provide more in-depth battery and alternator testing for free.

Please email me if you have any question.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Multi-rib belt Removal & Replacement

Check on upper rad shroud or under hood for routing diagram. Depending on what engine, procedure may vary a little. I wouldn't panic on replacing anything other than belt unless you noticed something noisy under hood in last while.
If not up to it, a mechanic should be able to do it for you in a few minutes usually, but won't hurt to ask before, just in case.

Isuzu Trooper V6 2001 multi rib belt adjustment

First, if you're serious about car repair, get the shop manual (helminc.com). Not cheap, but cheaper than ruining your engine.

Second, unless you are confident in your mechanical abilities and / or are willing to use your vehicle as training, leave major work to the pros. A good mechanic is like gold, and just as hard to find.

Third, you don't really adjust the tension. There is a spring-loaded idler that puts just the right amount of tension on the belt. Using the proper tool, you lever the idler to take the tension out and slip the belt off the other pullies. Then take the new belt and rout it just like the old one, lever the idler again, then slowly release it back against the belt to take out the slack.

Piece of cake...

Alternator belt diagram 1992 Isuzu trooper

1. Remove battery terminals and secure them away from the battery posts using nylon wire ties.

1a. Fine some comfortable eye glasses (clear or yellow) and keep them on. There are plenty of opportunities to get debris in your eyes during this procedure.

2. Spray "PB Blaster" (loosens bolts) on two bolts that secures alternator.

3. Jack-up vehicle on side to access alternator. Use a jackstand to support.

4. Using a 10mm open-ended wrench, loosen the bolt that swings the alternator. Screwing the bolt "in" or toward the engine will allow play to increase in the alternator belt. Loosen the 12mm bolt slightly next to the 10mm bolt (approximately 1.5" toward engine).

5. Continue to loosen 10mm bolt until there is enough slack in the belt to remove the belt from the alternator pulley.

6. Remove belt. It may be possible to remove belt without removing fan faring. Maybe not. If not, you will need to remove plastic fairing. If you must remove fair, go below fan fairing and disassemble connectors that hold together pieces of fan fairing. Carefully remove.

7. Install alternator fan from above.

8. Check that alternator belt is on all tracks (from below with a flashlight), and slowly tighten.

9. Secure 10mm and 12mm bolts. Recheck tightness.

10. Reassemble battery connection and run vehicle at idle for about 5 minutes. Check belt for proper tension.

11. CAREFULLY check tension of belt. Or disassemble battery connections and re-check belt tension.

12. Reassemble fan fairing (if not already assembled), re-connect battery terminals, and have a nice day. :-)
