How to solve fuel problems on 258 inline 6

Motor bogs down in second and third gears. At idle it seems to get plenty of fuel. Carb is brand new and as far as i know my mechanic adjusted the choke properly. Fuel pump looks new, but when i took off the fuel filter it was mostly dry. When filling the fuel tank it appeared that fuel overfilled from the top of the tank. I don't think that is normal but it shouldnt haveanything to do with why the performace stops at around 25-30 mph.

Make sure that the fuel line from the tank to the pump is not dry or cracked; the pump could be sucking air.

You can check the fuel pump by disconnecting the line from the carb and running it into a catch can -- a quart glass jar would be good. Turn the engine with the starter (you can pull the coil wire so it doesn't run on the gas in the carb). You should see a steady stream of fuel coming out. If not the pump may not be pumping to full capacity. Also check the oil. If it's over full or smells like gas the fuel pump could have a leak in the diaphram and be pumping gas in the oil. Tha'ts not good to say the least! Checking the fuel line is a good idea also, as already mentioned. There is a short rubber hose from the tank to the metal line and from the metal line to the pump, then the lines from the pump to the carb. All the rubber lines should be checked. On a vehicle that old I'd just replace them. Should be 5/16" line.

The thing to do now is a fuel pressure test pump could be weak just a few pounds under the recamended pressure will do that weather its mechanical or electrical . Is there a filter in the carb. wear fuel fine hooks? If none of this is an issue at least you can eliminate fuel deliverly as the problem.

SOURCE: problems with fuel?

I always have a problem with the word "seems" when used in diagnostics...Actual pressures are important. However, your problem may be more related to a map sensor or throttle position sensor. Get an inexpensive manual and do some testing using a decent volt/ohm meter and see what you come up with. (map sensor also needs vacuum hand pump to do some testing)

SOURCE: 1987 jeep wrangle will not start or run

Uncouple the fuel line coming from the pump at the carburetor, place a clean can under the line, and have someone operate the starter--you should have fuel shoot from the line in spurts as the engine turns. If it does, then the entry port on the carburetor is plugged. Remove the float assembly and pull out the float needle valve. Hook the fuel line back to the carburetor and try the starter again, there should be fuel pumping into the float bowl. If not, check to see if there is a filter on the fuel inlet path that may be plugged. If no filter, remove the float needle seat to see if something is blocking the fuel passage. If all else fails, use compressed air to blow backwards through the needle seat (remove the fuel line again). Hope some of this helps!

Idles but losses power

Fuel pump not giving enough pressure out of idle...seeing that you have changed the carb....you are having a fuel air ratio problem. Check carb again and then check your fuel pump.

I have a 92 ford econo van 1/2 with a straight 6 in it. the engine idles fine but if I put it in gear to take off it bogs down or dies. what am I missing? help anyone?

check fuel pressure if low probably [one of the most common problems] need fuel filter -others need tune up -egr valve carboning up [clogging]-- carb needs adjustment/cleaning-air filter clogging -feel and listen to exhaust if sounds like starving or little air coming thru possible cat clogging

My 83 Chevrolet runs great, (brand new 350) and starts great but if it idles to long (with no sounds of any problems) and I get truck up to 20-30 mph it either bogs down real bad or dies. Once it seems to...

Mine did that and it was vapor lock. I wrapped a 3/8th piece of copper tubing around a 3" iece of pipe and made a coil and slipped it up onto my a/c dryer and put insulating foam tape over it. connected my fuel line from fuel pump and to carb and when I turn my a/c on it cools my fuel. Worked for me in Houston Tx.

Engine bogs down

Whatever your problem is, I would guess that it happened after you began to drive it. I would consider looking for a vacumn leak. Plus, it would be helpful to know how the carb change affected the problem, as it does seem like fuel.

There are inline fuel filters under neather the truck body that may cause a problem, as well.

But I still feel that based on the limited amount of information, I would look for a vacumn leak. For example, if it has power brakes, a leaking hydrobooster can leak vacumn and throw of your air/fuel ratio. Vacumn pressure at idle should be 14.2, and at a higher idle should drop to about 12 or 11 inches of vacumn.
