AC Squeal The AC makes a a noise that sounds like a loose belt. However I have already tightened the tension adjustment completely and replaced the belt. At higher RPM the squealing stops. My question(s) are: Is this indicative of a failing clutch? If it is most likely belt slippage, could I replace belt with slightly shorter belt or do I need to replace the tension adjustment device (the tension adjustment appears to be working properly)? The AC works fine its just whenever the compressor engages at lower RPM i.e. idling, there is a slight squealing sound. The squealing is typically louder when AC is first engaged and then it will reduce considerably but will not completely go away unless the engine RPMS are about 1400. During highway driving conditions, I never hear the squealing only in stopped traffic.

Odd,possibly the AC is overcharged,or a pulley(either tensioner or
PS ) is out of line. Wish I knew what kind of vehicle. Might help.

Sorry. I put the make and model in the orignal question but for some reason it did not appear. it is a 1996 Isuzu Trooper LS

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2013

The belt appears to be running true not misaligned. What i was unsure of was if a failing clutch would stop squealing when the engine is revved. The belt seems to be pretty tight i.e comparable to the other two belts.

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2013

Also, I did not start having this problem until the AC and clutch were replaced. Took it back and they said that it was the belt and that there was no more adjustment. I verified that the adjustment nut is fully engaged. I though I might try a shorter belt but wanted to rule out the clutch first since it is supposed to be new.

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2013

Also verified that the installed belt is the correct belt. It just seems like there is not very much adjustment. Theres alot more scew left when loosening to install the belt. From not fully engaged as tight as it will allow me to adjust, I only have to loosen about 15 revolutions or so to remove the belt. When i feel underneath the tensioer, there is still about two inches of screw left for further loosening if required.

yep ,don't think it;s the clutch, still may be overcharged

My serpentine belt is a little bit loose. Do I tighten the belt using the tensioner or should I use the pry the alternator forward method?

The tensioner is an automatic device. You DONT Adjust it. Sounds like you need a new belt and probably should replace the tensioner. Tensioner have a limited lifespan usually 75000 to 100000 miles

Had radiator replaced n a bolt put on alternator which is ok. New noise in idle...it squeals. Gets worse when a/c is on. In idle I pop hood N noise goes away. 2006 tiburon 4 cyl auto

Probably should replace the belt. A worn belt will squeal sometimes.'
Another thought is the belt tight enough A belt that is too loose will squeal under stress .

How do you stop a belt from squealing when you crank the engine? It has a new belt less than 50k and self-adjusting tensioner. I was told not to spray anything on it...

50k isn't new but also isn't that high a milage , how old is the belt ,as age as well as mileage are the factors when replacing belts , chalk dust or french chalk , which are the same thing , thrown onto the belt just as starting should stop the squeal , the squeal is caused by the inner side of belt that runs around the pulleys becomes shiney and cant grip as well as it used to

Why does the Lexus rx300 belt make a squeel noise when a/c unit starts running?

Most LIKELY is either the belt needs to be replaced or the belt tensioner needs to be replaced. The belt gets hard and "slick" as it ages, the tensioner holds the belt tightly against the pulleys. Either could cause slippage (hence the squeal) when the A/C comes on.

I hear a kind of squeal or winding noise whenever turning the steering wheel in my 2005 Rendezvous, and I've added power steering fluid

your power steering belt might be loose or may have stretched due to weather related issues, or may have the adjustment worked loose. suggest you adjust the tension on the belt[power steering belt] youneed to have it tightened. you may even need a replacement pump. is it leaking fluid onto the ground? if so, it may be a loose hose or a busted hose. if you are mechanically inclined, please repost with specifics on if it's leaking fluid or belt is squealing? otherwise,i suggest you have it looked at from a professional. hope this helps and if you need further assistance with replacement of power steering pump, or directions of the belt tension, just ask. we will be happy to assist!

Getting a 'squealing' noise from the engine all the time. What is the cause likely to be??

Depending on the model it could be a belt alignment problem, loose belt or bad bearing in a pulley. If the squeal gets louder if you spray water in the area of the pulley it is most likely a loose belt. I would start by looking at the belt itself first then spray WD-40 in the bearing area of the Idler pulley and tensioning pulley. If the WD-40 works the problem is a bad bearing. Otherwise it is again, most likely, a loose belt. As a final check you can spray belt dressing on the belt and if the squeal goes away then it is your belt being loose. This could be caused by a belt being stretched over time or a tensioner not working correctly due to a weak spring, if equipped with spring loaded tensioner. If it doesn't have a spring loaded tensioner then you may just need to tighten the belt by adjusting it.

There is a squeeling by the belt/pulley area

It's a loose belt for sure.

If you have a spring loaded tensioner, and the belt has stretched with time, the tensioner will reach the limits of its travel without tensioning the belt enough to prevent that squeal.

If it has an adjustable tensioner, tighten the belt up.

How can i stop my AC belt from making noises when my AC is on

The reason your belt is making a noise is either your belt is worn and needs replacing or the belt tension is out of adjustment and needs checking and adjusting.
It is a good idea to replace it anyway specially if the belt has small cracks on the inside.
