The transmission will not shift into first gear and take off in over drive you have to start it in 3rd gear on the colum and take off till it shifts into 2nd and manuly shift the colum into OD to get it to shift up then when it down shifts it wiill shift thru every gear except first buy itself but when u drop into first the truck seems to be in neutral unless u restart by down shifting the colum what do u think is causing the problem and what would i need to do ot fix the problem i would greatly aprecieate it thanks

i also have this same problem and i keep getting told to check these parts 1. pressure solenoid and pressure sensor (located in trany) 2. the control module / computer (located under dash or center console) or 3. the shift solenoids (also located in trany) if you have any luck post it if these don't work b/c these parts add up to be about the same as a rebuilt trany with warranty (note new trany will not help a bad module)

It sounds like you have a shift linkage problem. Did this start after going off road? If so, check for damage. You MIGHT be able to do some repairs yourself but would be better off going to a transmission shop. If the problem didn't start after off-roading or other damage, there are several possible issues that could be causing the problem: 1) A broken band; 2) a bad vacuum modulator; 3) leaking vacuum lines; 4) blockage or broken springs in the valve body. In any case, you are better off going to a reputable transmission shop.

98 Trooper (4L30E automatic)won't shift into 3rd.

Based on the symptoms you described, it is possible that the issue is related to the valve body of the transmission. The valve body is responsible for controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid through the transmission and is made up of various valves and solenoids that regulate pressure and flow.
When the winter drive is engaged, the transmission may be bypassing the valve body and locking into third gear directly, which would explain why it starts in third gear when winter drive is engaged. However, the hard shift from 2nd to 3rd and the inability to shift into 3rd without winter drive suggest a problem with the valve body.
It's also possible that there could be a problem with the transmission control module (TCM) or the wiring and electrical connections between the TCM and the transmission. A diagnostic scan tool can help identify any error codes or other issues related to the TCM.
Given that you have already replaced the 2nd to 3rd shift solenoid without any improvement, it may be best to have the transmission inspected by a professional mechanic or transmission specialist who can perform a more thorough diagnosis and determine the exact cause of the problem. They may also recommend a rebuild or replacement of the transmission if the issue is more serious.

Why does my 1974 international 100 truck not shift from 2nd to 3rd

If it is an automatic trans, chances are the problem is inside the transmission. Probably the 3rd gear clutch pack.
