I have a 1996 5.2 dodge ram 1500. All of my wires need to be placed on the distributor cap. Where do I start with number 1 ion the distributor cap

bought a dead car or made it dead doing this job?
does not matter all , just new wires.
replace them 1 by 1 ,never more at once.
or OOPS?
or did all wrong and need what to do now
well, put the engine crank pulley at #1 firing
on compression stoke, not exhaust stroke, valves both CLOSED
and BINGO rotor points to #1 wire.
then rotor direction
and last lay the wires back down. (rotor must be at #1)
if confused by TDC learn there are 2 on clinder 1.
end of compression stroke
end of exhaust stroke (4 cycle engine it is)
next time mark #1 before pulling wires, mark cap #1
do not unclamp the DIZZY base bolt or lose timing.
52-undefined-undefined-0.jpg now the trick for true TDC 0degree mark.
there are many
  • valve cover left off both valves closed ,bingo
  • use compression gauge to find TDC<PSI high bingo
  • PSI 0 not
  • or the thumb pushing over spark hole #1
  • feel no pressure crank pulley turned CW fail
  • feel pressure now? bingo TDC about to happen
  • next time learn how to do it right. not be stuck in TDC H3LL. (not me have all the tools to find it)

I have a Chevy 2500 pick up truck. My son thought he'd replace the spark plugs. He removed the distributor cap, didn't understand it and now the truck won't start. He did not replace any spark...

firing order for 5.7 v8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 mostly all of the chevy v8s are the same firing order. the rotor button in distributer turns clockwise, the cylinder numbers are 1-3-5-7 on drivers side, 2-4-6-8 is on passengers side. To get started get your distrutor cap[new one] look on the top you will see a #1that's where you begin you must know if if rotates clockwise or counter clockwise start in that direction then follow the firing order and cylinder line up. good-day!! if cap is not marked, just pull out #1 plug, put a straw or similar in plug hole on top of piston. turn engine over by crank in front of vehicle with a wrench, when the piston comes to the very top just before it starts going down. this is tdc. and rotor button should be pointing to #1 wire on dist, cap. follow from there. good-day !!

What is a firing order

This is a quick explanation:

1996 Dodge Caravan
3.3 liter

c17hydro_162.gif

The big rectangles are referencing the engine, the cylinder associated to it's "firing" are the colored circles, and the are also the location of the spark plugs....the smaller lego-looking block is your coil pack. The spark plug wires run from the coil pack to the spark plug on the engine. The wires match 1 to1 or black to black...and so on....

When these are matched to each cylinder/spark plug and it's wire leading to the matching coil pack position, this is it's "firing order". If one of the wires is "crossed" meaning, not 1 going to 1, then the engine will "miss-fire".

90 dodge w150 won't start. It is acting like out of time but it is not. Backfires like crazy when trying to start. Replaced computer, ditributor, cap, rotor, wire, plugs, coil, pick-up.

Sounds like firing order or you have moved 1 cyl up or down
on cap
Rule of thumb take out no 1 plug and take off cap put your thumb
over plug hole so you can feel compression stroke if you have timing
marks line them up if you look at the rotor arm this should be no 1
check firing order and away you go

We replaced the distributor cap and rotor on our Dodge Ram Van 1500, but one wire popped off as we were working and we aren't sure they are in the right order anymore. How do we find a diagram to help us...

the firing order is usually stamped on the engine itself. Take off the distributer cap and turn the ignition to see which direction the rotor is turning.

The distributer cap has the number 1 plug marked . After finding the firing order, place the wires 1 where the cap is marked then in the direction the rotor is turning (ie:clockwise or couterclockwise). Keep looking . Most every motor I have seen has the firing order maked right on the engine.Or the owners manual ?

Exact spark plug wire placement

Turn the crankshaft till the timing mark is at 0...Check where the rotor points...if towards the back of the engine, turn one more time till it points to front. It is now at #1 on cap. Plugs are 1357 on left bank, 2468 on right. order is 18436572 in that order around cap in the direction the rotor turns when cranking.
