Not at all unusual for the timing belt to break and cause major mechanical problems inside of your engine. A failed timing belt can totally destroy your engine due to the extremely close clearences. That's why the strongly recommend a preventative replacement of the timing belts in all Hondas and Toyotas at specified mileage frequencies between 70,000 and 120,000 miles. Change the timing belt before it destroys the engine. You may now be at a point where only the Honda Dealer or authorized garage may be able to help diagnose the problem.

If you have never changed a cambelt (timing belt) then it is not recommended that you attempt it. It is a job for a mechanic, as getting the cam timing wrong on reassembly is easy to do and can have disastrous consequences. It is easy enough once you know how, and if you are reasonably mechanically able, I'd suggest getting a repair manual for your vehicle that has a step by step procedure for timing belt replacement. Companies like Haynes produce very good repair manuals.

hi from the uk if you renewed water pump you should always renew timing belt and tensioner as recommended /never use belt twice no matter what milage ? however unfortunately with the belt now having broken may i ask? were you driving ? or did belt break whilst trying to start after w/pump renew ? i assume you timed up correctly the crank and cam ?b4 fitting belt? unfortunately a broken cambelt whilst engine is running does cause damage but if you are fortunate ?? you may only have bent some valves this is due to piston hitting valve heads whilst cam is not turning but crank is still moving pistons up/down out of timing? if you could verify? how/when belt broke as prev asked above ? i could advise you as to possible damage or not?? but the repair will req the cyl/head beng removed first to assess damage and estimate of repairs hope this helps ?
pull out all the spark plugs and see if it will turn over. If one of the cylinders was hydraulically locked due to water filling it, the water will have a place to come out--the spark plug hole.
