Some camshaft sensors must be installed AND adjusted. More likely there is also a crankshaft position sensor which is more likely to have caused your problem. You need to but an inexpensive shop manual for your car from any parts store. Also double check the error code. I believe your car has variable cam timing such that a failure in that system can set the code even if the sensor is good. Is it possible your timing belt (or chain) may have failed?

Buy a Haynes Workshop Manual for Peugeot 406 1999-2002 PN 3982. Definitely it will help. It is a relatively easy job. Normal, the drive belt is a life time component if you keep the car properly. Mine is 2004 406 Coupe 2.0 auto. The belt is still in top condition.

It appears to be stuck-open throttle maybe due to a bad throttle cable or a broken return spring. Check the operation of the throttle with the engine off, and don't start the engine until this problem is repaired. Hope this helps!

yes the control pad and the engine management are connected via a unit called the BSI this very expensive to replace around the $1500 AU price so you don't want to replace it if you dont have to the 406 had problems with immobilisers ecu which is able to be unpluged, most of the time this will solve the problem.
if need be tow the car to the dealer and ask them to unplug the imobiliser
