lean codes are generated by faulty heated oxygen sensors
(HO2S) that are in the exhaust manifolds before the cat converters
their purpose is to read the exhaust gasses and report the composition to the ECM so that the air/fuel mix can be adjusted to maintain correct settings
the wuggles, A complete tune-up should include: spark plugs, wires, PCV valve, fuel filter and air filter. Change the oil and filter and add some injector cleaner to your gas tank. Also, check all of the vacuum hoses for any deterioration and replace any that look bad. Also, when is the last time you changed the transmission fluid and filter and your coolant? It's good to hear from someone doing preventative maintenance for a change instead of waiting for problems to occur. My hat is off to you. Good luck with this.
get a tune up done. spark plugs, wires , air filter. wouldnt hurt to change the differential fluid. if it has 4 wheel drive then get the transfer case oil done as well and front differential and have the whole viechel greased where ever there is a grease fitting, llike driveshafts, front axle joints. any friction won't help at all.
For 1998 Ford Truck Explorer 4WD 4.0L EFI SOHC 6cyl the Fuel Filter is located under vehicle, driver side, below seating area, near fuel tank, mounted on frame rail in fuel line

Hope this helps (remember to rate and commene this answer).
I would check the air filter, and replace the fuel filter, if it hasn't been done for awhile. It may be the fuel pump itself. I would do a fuel pressure test. Also, you may be in need of a tune up, plugs and spark plug wires.
depending on the year model.. plugs and wires distribitor cap and rotor. air filter. and defently a fuel filter. the more often you change the fuel filter the longer that high dollar 300.00$ fuel pump plus labor. will live. hope this helps.
