Went to start my 93 subaru legacy and when I turned the key, flywheel started to turn over then stopped. Tried it again and same thing. Waited a little bit and then nothing but a click and could hear fuel pump. It has happened in past but started after a couple tries. Replaced alternator 6 months ago and battery 3 weeks ago. Could it be bad starter or bad terminals?

Yes it was dented. Someone at work hit backed into my car putting a dent in front of my wheel well on driver side. Just had it in the shop 3 weeks ago to replace water pump, thermostat, timing belt, tensioner and battery. Check engine light was on but mechanic said it was the purge canister and that it was an emissions problem but wont affect how the car runs. I'm going to check terminals and clean them up when I get home tonight. Might be too dark to check grounds properly.

I would have all the grounds checked. Sounds like it is not grounding properly. This will in turn not allow the battery to charge correctly and will make other electrical devices to operate incorrectly. For example the body ground if not good it will try to find another ground IE the shift cable. This is not designed to maintain a connection of amperage and will allow battery to die. Also will cause problem with cable and could fatigue it enough to break. Just check for good grounds on motor and body. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

I had to replace my shift cable about two years ago because it had broke. Could all this be coming back around because of an improper ground?

I suspect either the ignition switch is worn out or the starter.
test the starter first then the ignition switch. both are fairly easy to replace and not too costly. if you are a diy person then do a screw driver starter test. This will determine if the starter works and usually how well. I buy the starter rebuild kits online for $35. The ignition switch is also around the same price and easier to change than the starter. The ignition switch is accessed by removing the lower steering column cover then the two screws for the upper cover. Then unplug the ignition switch then remove the holding screw. sometimes the wiring is taped up carefully remove the tape. when installing the new switch make sure the key is out so that the new switch will align correctly

SOURCE: Hard to start warm engine

Sounds like you have a problem with your fuel injectors, either they are working to much or not enough once they get warm....

Take it to a shop ant tell them you want the injectors tested.

SOURCE: My 99 Subaru Forester did not start. It turns over

I also have a -99 Forester S turbo with the same problem. Runs like clockwork between failiures but all of a sudden engine turns but will not start. The workshop recomended fuelfilter replacement but I thaught it could have something to do with the immobilizer. what have you tried and ruled out?

SOURCE: 95 Subaru Legacy wagon won't turn over with a jump

you need to make sure that all connections from each unit are attached properly and free of corrosion.
also it is not unheard of to get a bad part fresh out of the box. so you may want to check that as an option too.

Sounds like the transmission has reached the end of service life. I have a 93 that did the same thing. It would drive until the transmission heated up then nothing, except for reverse. I had a TRW rebuild transmission installed and now my 93 Legacy has 500,000 miles. $2,200 to repair vs $25,000 to replace. The only thing you would miss is the new car smell for a few weeks. But you can keep $20,000 plus.

It wont start

That sounds more like a dead battery than anything else. The bendix, the bit that engages the starter to the flywheel, usually goes bad a bit more slowly and causes more dramatic persistent grinding. A bad starter is also possible, as are bad battery cables. The starter mortor and bendix are both replaced when you install a rebuilt starter. If a jump start doesn't solve the problem, and connecting a jumper cable directly from the + battery terminal to the starter motor doesn't help then replace the starter. If it does help, then the problem is probably the battery cables.

'93 subaru impreza wont start

If it's quiet enough, turn the key to the "on" position without cranking it, then stop and listen for a humming or buzzing sound. If you don't hear it, your fuel pump may be having issues.

1996 Subaru Legacy No Power At All

Last night I checked the battery and it was still good. I disconnected and then reconn ected both terminals and that brought the power back. When I turned the key the power went out again. I repeated the procedure but did not turn the key. Instead, I took off the knee bolster and tried to wiggle the wires under the dash to see if I could find the source since it seems to be related to the ignition. Nothing cut the power so I started it up and it worked fine except for the check engine light which was flashing that says I have a misfire condition. I drove the car 25 miles to work this morning and will be taking it to the dealer for a better inspection.
