I live in Hawaii where it gets quite hot during the day. With that said, my 2005 Legacy GT is parked in my garage at home during the evenings and parked in a secure/covered garage during the days. Rarely does my car get left outside to the elements, yet, for several years now when my car sits out in the sun, the dash and airbag cover get very sticky...like glue. It's really gross to touch. When in the shade, it gets much less sticky, but not hard like you would expect. Last night, there was a news report on our local news station where they investigated similar issues with Toyota Camry's. Initially, Toyota was not going to do anything about it, but when brought to light on the news, they changed their mind. Since the local Subaru dealer also owns the Toyota dealer as well, I thought it best to try and contact them ASAP about my issue. I have an April 17th appointment to bring my car in. I hope they replace my dash and steering air bag cover as well. Any idea why the dashboards have been having these issues? I know from searching the internet that this is not just a Toyota and Subaru thing...it appears to affect the dashboards and interior trims with a rubbery texture...I have had other items such as my Parrot Bluetooth unit remote degrading in a similar manner as my dash...
The plastic technology is only up to a certain level of with standing the heat. It will eventually becomes sticky and Oily. The only way to stop the plastic from further degrading is to treat the plastic and Not Clean it. By Cleaning, the condition will get from Bad to worst and eventually wipe off the whole plastic surface. By treating it, the plastic will no longer be sticky and oily and hence prolonging the life span of the Plastic. Use the Conditioner from the sticky melting solution dot com that can stop the sticky and oily surface within an hour. Home

try wiggling wires under the front seats ,if that dont work then take the builb out
SOURCE: Dim dashboard lights and problem starting
Could be a loose or dirty battery connection, poor battery, or alternator. Check all the cables and connections to your starter. Clean your battery posts. Have your alternator and battery checked. It sounds like you are either running off just the battery or just the alternator. One of them is not right.

Donna,
You can go to Auto Zone . They can scan the car for codes for free, and check the Alternator. I think with all the issue with the dash lights coming on, The codes should get a tech in the right direction. You could be right and the Alternator is the root cause of failure.
Good Luck

Ditto here on a 2005 jeep. We bought it new and found the battery dead on a few mornings the first year. Nothing left on. Did the new alternator thing about 2 yrs. ago and a few batteries along the way. This is what we noticed..... If you leave a CD in the CD player, that is the prime little devil that sucks out the juice. Now, we never turn off the car while a CD is in the dash. Now, maybe not necessary every time, but always overnight and now by habit, all the time, we make sure there is no CD inserted when the car is off. Hope this helps.
I verify its not a stuck relay...
I disconnect connector under dash and horn stops...
I then suspect its the Horn contacts or a worn grounded wire in air bag/horn switch assembly in steering wheel.
The decorative Vinyl cover shrinks with age...presses on horn contacts against air bag.
I Disconnect Air bag connector (identified as Yellow wire and Connector) usually under dash.
WARNING: ( I Do not - I DO NoT probe the yellow harness/connector with a meter or test light. A test light WILL Detonate my air bag, and impale the bracket in a nearby object/person - me.)
I Removed screws (2) behind steering wheel - which allow air bag horn assembly to be removed.
I Disconnect Air bag connector in this location as well (identified as Yellow wire and Connector) and then;
The red (color varies) and black Horn wires will be plugged into ribbon connectors usually (2) two that feed/connect to contacts for horn function on face of air bag.
I pause here and verify horn will stop blowing when I disconnect the wires going to horn contacts. So I get horn blowing again...
Check horn: To verify this is the cause; I reconnect (whatever fuse/relay/ connector (Not the airbag connector) I disconnected so they will stop blowing) and get horn/s so they are blowing again...
Then I disconnect the ribbon connectors to verify blowing stops.
Note: The experience I had with horn on
Buick Park Ave was at night when temperature cools after hot day, the vinyl cover shrank and horn blows... pressing on horn area of steering wheel firmly would stop horn briefly - then continue.
Note: I will need a rivet tool and rivets... to reassemble.
WARNING: I Do not drill into airbag explosive container. If I do not know how to carefully drill off correct rivet heads and remove vinyl decorative cover from air bag/horn... I STOP and go to the junkyard or ebay and purchase/replace the airbag/horn assembly.
I continued by drilling out rivets (the rivets holding vinyl cover) by using a drill bit as large (or smaller) as the head of rivet and drill gently to release head from rivet body/shank.
I mark all pieces with a magic marker to verify I reassemble right side up (all metal brackets and trim plates and cover).
I Remove vinyl cover exposing horn contact pads which were sandwiched between cover and air bag container.
I used a razor blade to remove vinyl honeycomb material from area of vinyl cover - that when pressed - would activate horn/contacts.
Only a 1/16 of an inch or less needs to be removed.
(I Bend cover inside out and shave material off of area slowly. Care not to cut myself.)
I Reassemble in reverse order with rivets.
Check horn: ...function at this point... by plugging in horn connectors and assure horn contacts work properly as expected.
