I'm having the same type of problem with my 97 tacoma. I have this small black box located behind the tail light assembly. I have 12 Vdc going into black box and 0Vdc coming out. The running lights, the turn signal lights, and the emergency flashing lights all work great but no brake lights. The upper brake light on the cab works fine. Could both of those black boxes have failed? I'm puzzed! Thanks.

The same thing happened to me. After checking fuses, wiring, etc....it turned out to be burnt light bulbs. Yes, it's as simple as that & yes...2 light bulbs can burn out at the same time. If the upper brake light on the cab works fine, but not your rear break lights, then it's most likely the light bulbs. EZ fix.

1996 toyota tacoma..when braking the right turn signal becomes brighter but does not flash..

check for a short/ bad earth in the brake light system/indicator system as it indicates that the 25watt brake light is earthing out through the indicator bulb making it brighter and overcoming the flashing power from the indicator unit.

2000 tacoma

Try turning the parking brake handle and pressing it in. If that does not work then replace the under dash sensor on the parking brake (not the brake pedal). Hope this helps.
