When starting the truck you must start it in first gear, if you start it in neutral it will not shift in to any other gear. When driving and you engage the clutch to shift it will go to neutral and will not shift out of neturel, you must stop kill the engine put it in first then start the engine. The shifting stiff in all gears. Oil level is OK and there is no slop or play in the shift stick. The transmission is quite except when shifting it makes a noise.
Why does my m5r1 tranny not shift into 5th or reverse?
The clutch on that vehicle is draging : a very common problen on that vehicle : The Clutch master cylinder probly has some air traped in it causing insuficient travel in the slave and failing to completly release the clutch. Inside the box of a new clutch , there should be a 4 page tech buliten advising on three ways to bleed this clutch. I have the same problem on my son's 88.
You might have to try to adjust the freedom of clutch pedal,
The noise during shifting can be adressed to exessive wear clutch parts or again it might be a sign that indicates the not complete enabling the calutch
To find out what is causing the noise, set the parking brake, place the vehicle in neutral and start the engine.
If you hear growling or grinding noises when the clutch is engaged, the cause is the transmission input shaft bearing.
A squealing sound that occurs when the clutch pedal is depressed and held is usually caused by a bad pilot bearing or bushing.
A chirping noise that intensifies when the pedal is slowly depressed would indicate a bad release bearing.
If you hear chirping while idling in neutral and the noise goes away when the pedal is slowly depressed, the fork/pivot ball contact point is making the noise
Hope that helps.

Internal slave cylinders are known to leak , unfortunate it is behind clutch assembly , i would change both , clutch master and slave cylinder

I had the transmission re built, now when I put it in gear, it makes a screeching noise as it shifts into each gear. What could it be?
stuck in neutral, clutch is engaging, shift lever moves but does not slide into gears
