I have having trouble disconnecting the brake light switch from wire harness on my Nissan Pathfinder 2001

I have been having difficulty with my Nissan Pathfinder. It hasn't been starting. Often times I can get it to start after several attempts, otherwise it always works if I jump start it. I have replaced the battery and have had the alternator, battery, regulator checked. I read online that this problem may be simply due to a faulty brake light switch. I know nothing about cars but I went to Napa and purchased the right part. I am able to identify the brake light switch but I can't seem to get it to detach from the harness. Please help me

Does it say 'emergency brake' or just 'brake'? If it just says brake, you could be low on brake fluid on your 2001 Nissan Xterra.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It isn't triggering any lights. However, when it doesn't start my brake lights won't come on even though the rest of my dash, headlight, interior lights will. I figured I should replace this 11.00 $ part before I start to replace things that don't need to be fixed. A friend who does mechanic work on the side hooked a voltmeter up to my car and everything with the alternator and the battery are perfect.

SOURCE: Truck Wont Start and Battery Runs Down.

get a load test done on you battery and alter nator and check your starter for corrision check battery connections before you jump start it and when hooking up cables to your truck let it charge for a few minutes before you crank it if alternator is fried it will only run on juice of battery then will die.the clicking sound is your starter trying to engage but not enough cranking amps left in battery if you can get it going or take the battery out and take to a good auto shop and get them to load test it no point replacing a good battery just to find out it is alternator or starter
I personaaly think it may be alternator but suggest you test if battery is good starter as well ! more thing check that battery terminals are clean and tight

SOURCE: Oldsmobile alternator doesn't work after

THE RED SMALL POSITIVE BATTERY FEED WIRE COULD BE BROKEN THAT GOES TO BACK OF ALTERNATOR.CHECK TO SEE IF POWER GOING TO THE WIRE.IT NOT POSITIVE BATTERY SMALL FEED CABLE BROKEN.OR YOU HAVE BLOWN FUSE LINK.IF ALL IS GOOD YOU COULD HAVE PCM PROBLEMS YOUR FIELD CONTROL CIRCUIT PART OF THE PCM CIRCUIT.HAVE VECHICLE SCANNED TO LOOK FOR ALTERNATOR PCM FAULT. AFTER YOU INSTALL NEW ALTERNATOR DONT CRANK THE CAR UNTIL YOU GET A SCANNER AND ERASE TROUBLE CODE FIRST BECAUSE THE PCM THINK OLD ALTERNATOR STILL IN VECHICLE AND WILL CAUSE CHARGING PROBLEMS.

SOURCE: 1994 Plymouth Acclaim 2.5, 4 cyl won't start

on the backside of the alternator there should be a large black/grey wire. check to see if there is battery voltage on that wire. If there is not than you have a blown fusible link that is inbetween that wire and the battery. If there is power there than check for power on the dark green with dark blue wire. There should be power anytime the engine is running. If there is no power than there is a problem with that wire in between the alternator and the ASD relay.

Check those two out and let me know what you find.

On a 01 pathfinder the brake lights will not go off even after i changed the brake light switch

Hope you can read the wire colors, the top wire is voltage to stop lamp switch. The bottom wire is voltage from stop lamp switch. The bottom wire should not be hot unless switch is activated. You can use a test light to check voltage on bottom wire. If you pull up on brake pedal, do the brake lites go off? Is there an adjustment for brake switch? Maybe the brake pedal can be adjusted? I suppose the connector for brake switch could have a problem? Maybe circuit is shorted to voltage, somewhere? That's all I can think of, at the moment.

1999 nissan pathfinder brakes lights stays lit when ignition switch is turned off

the brake light switch will work without the key in the ignition if you push on the brake pedal, its just the way its designed. if you were to test the switch with a test light one wire is always powered up and the second wire is only powered when the brake pedal is pushes to activate the switch. if you test both wires without pushing the pedal I think you will find you have power on both wires indicating the brake switch has shorted and is working all the time. replace the brake switch.

Cannot get shifter out of park without using screw driver

I have found broken wires right at the connector on the brake light switch. That switch does a lot more than just activate the brake lights, it also releases the shifter interlock solenoid, and that is why you have to press the brake pedal to shift out of park. (there may be two switches attached your brake pedal lever, if so then check both wire connectors carefully for broken wires).

92 Nissan Pathfinder brake lights stuck on

Change the brake light switch on the brake pedal arm. Go down to the parts store and ask for a new brake liight switch for your Pathfinder and look up under the dash where the brake pedal arm goes and you will see the switch. You will need to unplug the wires to your old one and disconnect it and install the new one the same way. It is pretty much self adjusting once the brake pedal is released. If the brake light does not go out adjust the switch pin to be longer so it will depress when the pedal is released
