Frozen power window

The car is a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero. The driver's side window in front is frozen shut. All the other windows work fine. When the button to open the window is pressed, there is no sound. Thanks for any help.

emissionwiz...Thank you for your prompt response! How do I test the window switch? Do I need a special tool?

  • Anonymous Feb 25, 2009

WOW! Thanks for the fast response again! I am asking these questions for my brother-in-law. He says he is sure it must be the lift motor, and wondered how to get to it. Would you mind explaining what to remove on the door to access it?

    Thanks!

I just fixed a frozen up one on a 2002 Alero, I removed the door panel, unbolted the motor and it had a lot of pressure on it. When re-installed with no preload, the window worked fine. I lubed the tracks with silicone spray just to be safe.

I've seen this many times over the years on GM windows and still can't explain why it happens. Perhaps holding the switch in the up position too long/?

The passenger side brake light, and passenger side (front and back) window control doesn't work is it a fuse?

Well, the short answer is no.
The lights and windows are are different fuses.
There's a slight chance you have a problem with a ground wire on that side, but I doubt the two problems are related.
I would check the light for power and ground, and look at the window switches for power and ground. The windows are powered thru the driver switch on most cars.

Power window on driver's side won't go up on 2002 alero what can i do?

Windows/regulators/motors on early 2000 GM vehicles are notoriously weak and failure prone-it will need to be replaced to correct, there is no easy fix-about $200 at an average body shop.

The driver side window switch does not work but all the other switches control are functioning properly.

Use your fist and lightly tap at the bottom of door while holding switch on.If that works window mtr needs replaced. The drivers window gets used the most and always the first to go

Neither front window works anymore...

Sounds like it could be the actual switch for the windows with could be an easy fix if U know how to remove the switch from the door.

Hope this helps

2000 oldsmobile alero

GM cars have a window regulator that is made of a cable and plastic gears. They wear out and windows quit working. The new unit comes with regulator and new motor. This is a common problem on gm cars. These regulators are around $250 each. I would search junk yards, or look on ebay they sell aftermarket for around $80.00

Window will not roll up

Their is a separate motor for each window. The least expensive fix is to replace the entire track assembly and motor. This is not a big job if you have done it before but it could be if you are not mechanical.

2003 Alero passenger window

I would be very suspicious of the drivers master swich. If the window works fine on the other side it's an easy assumption that the window motor and regulator are operative. The switches are usually fairly inexpensive (less then 100.00 ) and easy to install
