Grinding sometimes while shifting

My jeep has sometimes started grinding while I shift into first thru 3rd gears. It is now difficult to get it into first gear until the vehicle is completely stopped. I have made sure the clutch is all the way in. Sometimes the stick just feels rough to get into position other times it is actually grinding.......

Your clutch is not disengaging. If it a hydrolic clutch chk. the fluid in resavor, Or slave cyl. for the clutch is bad, Or it has got air in it and needs to be bleed. This is a clutch problem, nothing wrong with trans. If its a manual clutch linkage its an ajustment thing. My best guess if its hydrolic slave cyl. went bad, or resavor is out of fluid.

likely the shift rails are worn inside the trans. In changing shift, you have removed the wear on the end of the stick, but not the corresponding wear where the stick fits into. It will need to be taken apart to repair this. (would not hurt to have synchros replaced at the same time.) OR, replace transmission if you have an inexpensive one available.

SOURCE: HELLO EXPERTS I have a 1995 jeep wrangler with

Check all your hydraulic connections for seepage . If you find nothing leaking, check where the rod goes into the master cylinder under the dashboard...If still nothing, I'd change the master cyl, as it is likely internally bypassing and permitting the clutch to release. PS it takesa a special "touch" to shift gears without using the clutch, if you cannot do that don't drive it Till you get it fixed...you will damage synchros and will need to have trans removed and rebuilt. $$$you don't want to spend!!!

SOURCE: 1989 jeep wrangler wont shift gear and clutch gone loose

Get the clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder looked at.One of the 2 has failed. If the pedal goes to the floor or is very loose, this is very likely the cause. Not an expensive fix.Hope this helps

Check the transmission oil. Maybe it is about to change. Some models dont have the shift stick directly on to of the transmission, Some use a linkage from the shift lever to connect to the transmission. If yours is using linkages try checking them. They could be bent or worn off. Usually these linkages have plastic bush at both ends and they wear off with time, making shifting difficult.

The 3rd Gear Synchro is worn or damaged, which is why it grinds when you try to upshift or downshift into 3rd gear. When it goes out completely you will have a very hard time shifting into 3rd gear, since the Synchro lines up the gears to make shifts smooth and easy.

My 89 Jeep YJ manual will not go in to reverse while running

Problem is likely either a worn shift fork or bad synchro (both inside the transmission) It's unlikely that you have a clutch problem otherwise the problem would be with first and reverse and shifting other gears would also be difficult.

Grinding gears while shifting gears

4th gear started grinding when I shifted up or down and then 3rd started to do the same unless I shifted very carefully. You have 2 choices. 1 - rebuild it since you'll have to take apart to find the problem. 2. try changing the gear oil and make sure its the right synthetic grade, very expensive. This solution is working so far for me. BTW you must change the gear oil in the manual trans every 40k

if this is a 5 speed manual transmission...all you need to do before putting your jeep into reverese is puting it into first gear and then shifting it to reverse to avoid any grinding or problems shifting into reverse...this isn't a problem just a poor jeep design by not installing an extra gear to eliminate this grinding or shifting problem
