No the transmission shift cable is streached and needs to be adjusted. you should be able to shift the van to neutral and start it in that gear. just watch when you park because it will roll away. use parking brake. if it doent start in neutral then your cable may be snaped and not noving the gear selector on trans at all

SOURCE: on my 2002 montana wont start up

There are 2 things to check and No 1 is that either the starter or Battery are no good OR the engine has siezed up (and i dont think so ,,so first) add a jump battery to your battery and put Red to RED on your car and Black or earth lead BLACK to earth on battery or to any bolt on engine.try starting (if yes then battery is no good) if no ,,can you turn engine over by hand on bottom pully if yes then its Starter or solinoid, or jamed starter on bendix..
Try all above and let me know how you go Ron

2001 Pontiac Montana, Been in and out of shop a year now. Started when I had a starter replace. It will crank multiple times for a day or two. Not getting any bad codes from computer. Have had every sensor replaced. Let it set for a few days it will crank for a day...the next moring it will not crank for days. Wiring has been run and checked, fuel pump comes on, started is engageing fine. One mechanic said it was not getting fire, he replaced a unit on the back of the engine that usualy goes bad...still wont crank...the next day it cranks. i am about to redy to give up.....but it has low miles. need some help.

Right now you have a very dead and perhaps bad battery so the first thing you need to do it either have your battery charged and checked or just replace it, install the best battery you can afford the car should start. After starting have the charging system checked then have it checked for a battery drain. I hunch just a new battery will fix this. I hope this helps. Take care.

your shift cable is stretched or broke. try starting in nutral. if this doesn't work you need to adjust or replace shift cable. this is a very easy fix but it should start in neutral.

That'ts the sound of your starter trying to pull enought power to turn the engine over. Sounds like you need to charge or change the battery - have you tried getting a jumpstart? Get a jump and drive over to a shop where they can check your battery and/or your alternator.
