Unfortunately most of these cars require the subframe to be dropped down in order to remove the transmission.

You do not have to remove the subframe to extract the transaxle. I just removed one today and I know it can be done. Once the transaxle was disconnected I placed a large aluminum dolly underneath it. Next I placed two seperate sissor jacks on the transaxle's fluid pan. This allowed me to tilt the transaxle in a controlled fashion and roll the dolly forward, backward, and side to side. The transaxle to body mount has to be removed to allow some wiggle room. I also had the engine supported from the two hook eyes at the top of the valve cover. This allows you to also wiggle the engine some too. It took some doing and you need to pay close attention to not crush the exposed brake lines mounted against the subframe. The car also has to be up off the ground quite a bit so that there is room to lower the transaxle down towards the ground. It took me about 45 minutes to get the transaxle out by lowering, wiggling, tilting, rotating, and levering the transaxle slightly. After each move take a good look around to make sure there is clearance and you are not jamming anything. I tied up all the electrical connections and removed everything possible off of the transaxle to maximize wiggle room. Make sure the shift cable bracket, starter, and engine to transaxle bracket by the oil filter is off and out of the way too
