2009 ford escape transmission drain

you need to remove the spindle assy from the truck & press the bearing out & in   or you need to use a tool called the hub tammer to remove & install the hub bearing

the open pipe that you took the hose off of is the thermostat housing, you will need to remove this to reveal the thermostat, make sure you use a new gasket with sealant when reinstalling thermostat housing to prevent leaks and dont over tighten the bolts,run both bolts down as far as you can before final tightning

It sounds like the torque converter is locking up and sticking. You have to remove the transmission to replace it.

Ir should just be a rubber hose. Just slide it back onto the fitting again. If the plastic tail has broken off the nozzle you will need to get another from Ford to replace it before hooking it back up.

The larger drain plug was a 22mm or 7/8 most likely.
The smaller inner plug was a 1/8 pipe plug.

You need an adapter Otc 6604, from auto parts store or what works better is an 1/8 pipe thread, hose barb fiiting.

Why? Because you have two choices to add new trans fluid. Mercon V in your case. Either through the 3/8 pipe plug on the upper right side of the tail housing,as you look to the front, or through that small 1/8 fitting in the center of the drain plug. The bad news is, you will need to blow it in from a specially designed container,worth about $120.00. I have one and it works great,if you have an air compressor. You could make your own.

The idea is to fill the trans,warm it up to 180 degrees and any extra fluid will run back down your fill tube,attached to that adapter you put into the center of the drain plug.

If you check out the drain plug you will see a tube on it. that is the hot (180) full level.

I would pull the pan and wash or wipe out any clutch material and clean the magnet. The pan gasket is silicone and reusable. Be carefull not to pry on the shift selector switch removing the pan.

The fill is about four to four and a half qts. Should measure what came out and also compare to the fill, till it runs out the center plug proceedure.

I drain and fill twice,drive a week or two and repeat,if no slipping or other odd drivability issues with the trans

Also, pull the injector fuses and crank over the engine,and pump out the power steering fluid. Remove the smaller return hose at the reservoir and put into a bottle. Flush about a quart through, but try not to run it dry. Should be regular mercon or V, check your manual.
