Transmission is not shifting on 1984 Mercury Grand Marquis.

Was shifting fine yesterday, then today is wasn't wanting to shift at all from 1st to 2nd. I am going to change transmission filter and fluid tomorrow how many quarts does it take?

Was working fine earlier today, then went to go out an hour later and would not shift until 30 mph and shifted hard, then went out 6 hrs later and wouldn't shift until 50 mph. Fluid level on dip stick reads normal and fluid is a bright red and it smells sweet no scorch or burnt smell. All I could think was to change the transmission filter, have plans on doing it tomorrow unless someone else can tell me something to do.

Repeat--- Fluid & Filter have nothing to with anything Can try cleaning the valve body

Have a Scanner on it on the road test & look at sensor data Don't throw parts at it

Changing Transmission Fluid will NOT FIX IT

You change fluid because it looses it's ability
to remove heat from the trans

I will bet after tomorrow when you change the fluid,
it stops working & only slips

what do you suggest I do?

Not change the fluid I once owned a trans shop so got to one of them Becareful they don't pitch a complete rebuild You want a road test & a solution, not to pull the trans & please don't not ask about price they may escort you off the property

How do you reset the PCM on a 2000 Grand Marquis

did you check the transmission filter yet. It might be clogged even with new fluid. Next I would check the VSS vehicle speed sensor.

My PRNDL don't work, loose shift indicator won't go into gear. Plenty of transmission fluid, no obvious wear or breakage, what do I do now?

When you turn the key to the ON position are there any instrument lights on the dash? Does the radio work? If not, dead battery.

My grand Marquis won't shift into park but it goes

My Grand Marquis shift indicator offset. Car was stuck in reverse/neutral/drive. Had to take the bottom of dash apart where pedals are and tighten a couple of torx screws.

Transmission hesitates shifting into second and perhaps third gear when driving slow. When acceleration is positive transmission shifts smoothly. Reference "99 Mercury Transmission" as Subject when

Several things could be causing your problem:
  1. Auto transmission fluid is low
  2. Auto transmission fluid needs changing; this is an area that gets neglected by a lot of people;check the fluid and if its brown or gives off a burning smell, it needs changing. Very old transmission fluid will cause slipping in the transmission; if this is the case, it should be changed along with the filter
Hope you find that this answers your question. Best of luck.
Greg

p.s. If you have the fluid changed, make sure it's done from the tranmission pan, not through the filler tube; siphoning through the filler tube can be hazardous to the transmission, especially cars with a lot of miles
