2005 rear differental lock not engaging when i push the button, light on the dash flashes red

2005 toyota tacoma rear differential not engaging when i push the button on the dash, the indicator light flashes red indicating not engaging. I look at the connections above the differential look ok but did not check for electrical or vacuum leak and fuse look ok. what are the more common reasons for this? tj51lord

If its not engaging into 4 WD the vaccum actulator is more than likely stuck. The actulator is located on the front of the axle next to the the front gear hub it will have a plastic cover over it. Unbolt the two 10mm bolts that hold the cover on and spray down with WD-40, also pull back the rubber cover thats on the actulator staff and spray it. You might have to hit the staff a few times to get it to move just make sure its in 4WD. I had the same problem, that part is exposed to alot of water, snow, salt and so on. Or you could just replace it but its cheaper to spray it down with WD-40

there is a vacuum port on the front differential acuator if you have acces to a lift apply vacuum to the port until it pulls the differential into 4 wd its probably just stuck from lack of use or try TAPPING it with a hammer not HAMMERING it

Hi Ed, The 4 X 4 is selected after slowing to about 20 mph and is best deselected at standstill or very slow speeds. On occasions you may have to stop and reverse a short distance to get disengagement. The differential lock should be engaged in the same way as the 4 X 4. It should be used only if traction is lost and the vehicle loses traction with a wheel spinning free. Never use diff lock on hard top roads and always disengage as soon as possible. Regards John

I have a 2006 tacoma 4x4, the differential lock won't engage probably from lack of use. Is there any way to manually free up the lock? If this can't be done, how do you pull the diff lock off

I just bought a RAV4 in France. Owners manual is

This is a manual center differential lock button for 4WD models.
When you push this button, it manually locks the front and rear axles. An amber C DIFF LOCK light should appear on the dash board when engaged.
Push it again and it will disengage. It may take a few seconds to disengage, and a beeping will be heard until the diff is unlocked.

The center differential lock is only meant to be used in emergency situations. Driving with it engaged at all times can damage your differential.

The locking rear differential on my 2001 tacoma will not engage.

Form-a-gasket will work, just do not use the crappy blue or the clear, use black, or, if you can find it, the red stuff.
