Connections at the starter or the starter itself. see that the engine can in fact turn over, that it has not seized. the starter has two connections, one big and one small. check that the small one is getting 12v when the key is turned to the start position. if it is, then the starter needs to be rebuilt or replaced

thanks for your advice Robert.Do you have any idea how much it will cost to fix?

  • Robert Totic Mar 12, 2013

no idea; prices are relatively regional, and I am not in the states since 2000. it is cheaper to rebuild than to replace, and there are companies which will sell you a rebuilt and take your old one to rebuild and sell to someone else.

SOURCE: car wont start...sometimes

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid, usually cheapest and easiest to replace the starter and solenoid as a unit. It is always best to check for power between the solenoid and the starter with a test light, if the solenoid clicks but the test light doesn't light up you have found the problem in the solenoid.

SOURCE: intermittently the car won't start. sometimes when

I think you answered you own question, when you said "it almost seems that the battery is dying," Drive it (while you can) to a parts store and get a FREE check of your charging system. They can tell you if it's the battery-low charge, which may indicate the alternator is bad- or a battery that is ready to retire, (and it also could be the starter, but I'm betting it's the battery). Let me know what you find.

Hi i have an intermittent starting problem on my 2005 Volvo s40 1.8.

We don't have the 1.8 engine here, but the diagram for the 2.4 engine is at the link below. They should be similar.

Trying to figure out what is wrong with my my 2000 volvo s40 its wont start when i turn the key it just clicks is it the battery or could it be the starter

A weak battery will make the "clicking" sound you hear, also bad connections, loose battery cables or worn battery cables. Jump start the car to see if it cranks, if it does, charge or replace battery.

03 petrol S40 wont start, clicking from starter when i turn the key does this mean that the starter is f**ked? Also is there something about not push starting an S40?

Your starter is not hitting the flywheel. can be solenoid, can be something else. Starters are consumables, so if in doubt - get a new one.

You should not push start any AUTOMATIC transmission car. Any other is safe to push start.
