1989 Cavalier Z24 3.1 rough idle and hesitation

I have a 1989 Cavalier Z24 with a 3.1 and it idles rough, hesitation when you accelerate, and a raw fuel smell coming out of the exhaust. I changed TPS sensor, IAC valve, MAP sensor, EGR valve, plugs and wires, and O2 sensor and i still can find the problem. I have a1997 z24. Sometimes engine idle is ruff and hesitates on acceleration. Today oil started to spray from a sensor on the right side of my cams and emtied all the oil.

It sounds to me that the sensor your talking about is the camshaft positioning sensor. It regulates how much fuel you get to your engine, so that is also why you have the fuel smell as well.

1989 Cavalier Z24 3.1 rough idle and hesitation

It sounds like you may have a broken exhaust valve spring, although, like you have found out problems like this can be very hard to diagnose, but anyone with a compression tester and couple other tools could find out if this is the case. Hope this gives you another idea where to look.

1989 Grand Marquis 5.0 hesitation under load at 25, 40, 50 mph and slightly rough idle

What happens when you unplug and cap the vacuum line at the EGR valve? Does the problem go away? Before doing this does the car idle rough? If so perhaps the EGR is stuck open...
