Go to your local discount store and pick up an OBD II auto trouble code reader it'll cost around $50.00 depending on where you go. Make sure you read the package and that it says the reader can "clear" trouble codes. Follow the readers directions but be sure to check your current code to make sure you haven't developed a new problem. Also, some auto part stores will read your trouble code and reset it for free, you'll just need to check around in your local area.

Obd code p0457 fuel cap replaced mil reset defect not cleared connection checked ok

The code is for a large leak in the EVAP system such as a loose or missing gas cap. But it could also mean a loose or missing hose to the canister or other leak in the tank.
The computer vents the tank several times an hour while the engine is running, and it checks the system by pressurizing the gas tank. If the tank will not hold pressure the code is set.
You may have to check the top of the tank where the fuel pump gasket is, as well as the vent lines to the front of the car.
A mechanic would perform a smoke test to look for leaks.

Code po440 for my 2003 pontiac aztek..what does that mean? Is it serious...car seems to be running just fine. it come on like 6 months ago and then went away till yesterday.

This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer fuctioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

Leak in evap system, where and what is an evap system. 2001 mitsubishi Galant

I have the same failure that occurred when smogging my Ford Ranger. The EVAP test was just added a couple of years ago and it tests for leaks in the gas tank vapor recovery system. What this is a system of vapor recovery lines that connect from the gas tank and goes to a canister then returns to the intake and on the next engine start and gets used, instead of leaking into the air.

The only issue is these lines can develop a leak at any of the connection points or along the rubber portions and can be a pain to replace depending on your application. So until you fix the leak you will fail this test since they pressurize the system and if there is a leak it won't hold the pressure.

I have mercedes ml 430. check engine came on at the same time fuel warning light was blinking. took the car to authorized mechanic, they checked and found po455ctrl system grass leak. they reset the check...

no
it is more likely that the problem is in the EVAP system
code p 0455 refers to evaporative emission(EVAP)system---large leak detected ====causes --hose connections ---intake leak---EVAP cannister---EVAP canister purge valve
I would suggest to you to tell the mechanic to replace the EVAP purge valve as the problem is more likely to be that than the fuel tank
