Hi, so my dad bought me a 1999 vw beetle about a month ago and it came with a lot of problems. i don't know why he'd buy it but whatever. there's a bunch of electrical problems in the front, for example:
- mirrors have to be moved by hand
-radio doesn't work
-ABS light is always on
-doors have to be locked manually
-lock/unlock/alarm buttons on key don't work
-when it rains the brake light goes off and beeps
those are minor issues, howver it failed inspection for emissions/admissions i'm not sure how to spell it, but the guy said it was fine to drive. last weekened, my lights/blinkers didn't work but there was a coil thing next to the drivers door that i pushed in and made the lights turn on, since then the car has ran fine. but today we got a lot of snow from this storm and the car didn't start at all. it sounded like it was jumping or clicking in the morning and the lights would flash but now it doesn't start at all. just clicking noises and the lights are faded.
everything under the hood is practically brand new, and usually in the mornings it sounds like my car won't start, but it does and then you hear a slight beeping. but it goes away, and throughout the day it starts fine so i believe it's not starting because of the cold weather but i'm not sure. i really don't want it to die i just got it and i love it even with all its problems. so if anyone can suggest anything to make it start or tell me why this is happening it'd be greatly appreciated! thank you in advance (:
Old new beetle VW harness has contact resistance problems(vibration of wires) and needs to be recrimped the long wires(vibration can be stopped by silicone rubber anchoring). Cold weather make battery voltages low and needs recharged with handbrake on(headlamps off) 10 minutes warming engine up the whole winter.
Call AAA for repair? They have the most experience.

I have a similar issue on a 2001 Jetta sedan. jandkat seems to be talking about the old system that VW used (pre-1998). To my knowledge there is no vacuum-based locks in the 2001 models. I've had the door completely apart and there are defiantly not any vacuum hoses. The only 100% for sure fix I have found is to replace the door latch mechanism. There are some other options but I'm not sure they would completely fix the issues you are having. Now for the bad news: you can only get this door latch mechanism from VW dealers. I have yet to find a place online or elsewhere that carries them. They are around $185 for the latching mechanism and if you don't want to install it, be prepared to pay another $200 or so in labor. First to turn off the alarm you simply put the key into the drivers door and turn it to unlock the door twice, this is the factory setting to turn off activated Volkswagen alarm. As for the power locks they are air activated, in the trunk near the latch there should be a small electric motor that drives a small air pump with air lines running to all your locks. If this electric motor as worn out your locks will not operate, simple fix replace the motor. I'd try a used one first from a scrap yard to make sure but always check to see if there is power to the motor (you will need another person with a test light to perform this job). Do you have a key fob? Unlock the car with that and you should be OK. My sons Elantra is the same way, you can only get in with the fob. I guess the car thinks it's being stolen otherwise. If you don't have a fob, I'm no help

When you try and start the vehicle does all the lights and radio and stuff go off? And does the starter make any weird noises when you try and start it? I would go to the parts store and ask them to check your battery if you can drive it there. lol..........they will be happy to check it out for you. Still acts like it could be a battery issue.

there are 2 options, ABS module is most likely, I just had my ABS module remanufactured and it worked greate when i re-installed.
the second option is the wheel sensor could have a bad connection(may have been bumped when your bearing got looked at.
there are a few companies that repair ABS modules, i used modulemasters, they did a good job, i can not vouch for any of the other companies.
