When I start my Vett. - 3 of 4 times it would start perfect and the other time it would not start or it would do "running start". I would not even know the car started (I would engage the starter and let go thinking that the car was not starting to find the car actually did start. Wired). I had taken the car to the Auto Mechanic and he told me that "He thinks it could be the fuel pump (replaced the pump and filter when car ran out of gas 4.5 years ago by Chevey dealership for $1000.00) and also recommends a full tune-up (est. $1421.00). The Mechanic also checked all the codes and rpms and said that everthing looked fine. He did tell me the next time I start the car to: Put the key into the ignition that I should turn the key only to the "run" position first for a few seconds (he said to prime the engine) and turn it "off" and then turn it back on the "run" for a sec or two and then start the engine. Is this correct or a quick fix????? Please help
Sounds like an intermittent fuel pressure regulator problem, or the fuel pump periodically doesn't run when you turn the key on (electrical problem). When you turn the key to on, the fuel pump should run for a few seconds to pressurize the fuel delivery system (you should hear the pump running at the back of the car). His "fix" is to just do this twice to make sure the pump runs and the proper pressure is at the engine when you go to start the car.
I would check to make sure the pump runs for a few seconds with key on. I would also check the fuel pressure before and while trying to start the car (to make sure it is in the proper range).

the starter should be replaced. The solenoid is kikcing the pinion out but there is no contact being made to turn the starter motor. I have the exact same truck and before i changed the starter used the old starter tap trick. Tap the starter casing with a hammer and it should start turning again. hope this was helpful for you. Good luck.

You need to test the fuel pressure with a special gauge, the pressure should be greater then 35PSI. The Vortec set up has more to it but what you seem to be discribing is a faulty fuel pump. Im assuming that the fuel filter was changed too. But you need to have a special tool that will allow you to isolate the fuel flow from the tank to the engine. popular reasons for fuel system failiers are filter, pump, fuel pressure reg. valve(located underneath the plenum) and not common but maybe fuel pump relay.

your timing may be off usually when that happens . . have u done any work to the car recently?

Sounds alot like the ignition sensor. In my old Chevys it was under the dist cap, mounted on the dist itself. Mine was flat, slightly curved rectangle shape, with two flat prongs coming out both sides. If it would get an internal break in it, you cant see it. I would have the same problem as you, part was only about $12. And comes out with unscrewing two screws.
Might want to give it a shot.

try cleaning the connector that goes to the fuel pump, sometimes they corrode on inside. If that does not fix, test the wires feeding fuel pump with a multi meter until the condition shows itself again, if voltage drops to zero or very low then wiring problem, if voltage is unchanged with problem and fuel pump is not working and connectors are all clean, try replacement of fuel pump.
