While installing a new stereo in my step dads car, he lost the ignition key. We decided to pull the ignition module out and bring the entire thing to the dealership, to get a new key made. Two min after removing the whole ignition switch (tumbler, plastic casing, and the black exciter transponder) the key was found. We reinstalled the original parts, and attempted to start the vehicle. The DIC, right above the stereo said starting disabled due to theft system. I read online , to attempt the relearn procedure , wich I have now attempted at least 20 to 30 times. Every set of instructions I read says the theft warning will go off after about ten mins, well I can tell you that even after 3 hours it wont turn off. So far I tried replacing the ignition switch, that brings exactly the same result. I tried to bypass it via a video on you tube by placing a resistor between the yellow and black wires, same result. So the car has been dead 3 days now, any ideas ?

in the 1996 sunfire GM uses an anti theft lock system. It can be triggered by all sorts of things. In order to relinquish this you must have a key to turn the ignition. These are not coded just plain cut keys. Once you attain this you put the key in and turn the ignition to the ACC position and wait ten minutes (theft lock light will turn off), turn off and take key out. You MUST do this 3 times and then the theft lock will be disarmed.

Try this first, it takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted, be glad to help

Try starting it with the shifter in neutral. You might have a bad
Neutral safety switch.
