Gas smell with Subura Legacy

For the last 2-3 months, my 2001 Subaru Legacy has been intermittently smelling like gas. It comes and goes, but seems to happen most often when my tank is just above the half-way mark. Sometimes around the empty mark. The check engine light also came on last week, but went off later that day and hasn't come back on since. The smell of gas is inside and outside the car, but if I turn the heater off, the smell inside subsides. Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

There is a recall on some of the fuel lines under the hood, they get old and leak.

I would do a check run on the entire fuel line assembly to check for leaks. also, check the fuel pump seal for cracks as well as the manifold gaskets. you should run into the problem here.

Usually means there is a fuel leak in the engine compartment, and the heater is pulling the fumes into the car thru the vents under the windshield.

Smoking and boost

I think you have a failed turbo charger, they last around 100,000 miles. Have a dealer confirm this is the problem as the part is very expensive ans most be replaced by a professional to turn out right.

My car just started getting a strong gasoline smell. It goes away then is back after a mile or 2. I did not just fill up my tank. what can be the cause of this smell?

Loose hoses.

But, time-out, time-out. Do not pass Go, do not collect $100. When you smell gas, it's dangerous. Take it to a mechanic tomorrow.

Burning rubber smell from Subaru Legacy

Please have your exaust pipes checked, perhaps a mount is burning. The catalytic converter can make a nasty odor when it is clogged. Check the wear on the serpintine belt.

There is an intermittent gas smell.

This is not common on these models. Check all gas lines, pump seals(under the rear seat), gas filler hose for leakes...hopefully this helps
