Coming here was a pretty good start... FREE

What you need to do is AVAIL yourself of the circuit drawings & TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS (TSBs)...

The ABSOLUTE BEST drawings are found in your model and year's FACTORY+WORKSHOP+REPAIR+MANUAL...
(excepting FIRE ZONES & extreme winds) ... I strongly recommend paper CIRCUIT DRAWINGS

Typically 2000 Sunfire will include several different GM clusters
and the actual FACTORY manuals are not cheap...
(But few really great things... rarely are... ).

BEGINNING progress can be accomplished with FREE
drawings & TSBs from BBB Industries website
(registration is required ... as these are real documents).
BBB Industries Premium Alternators Starters Power Steering Products

SUCCESS comes from careful & CORRECT HANDLING
of sophisticated semiconductor circuitry (meaning: you must
beg, borrow or buy an anti-static wrist-strap... & use it )
$6...
Amazon com Rosewill ESD Anti Static Wrist Strap Components RTK 002 Black...

The slightest static spark... (you might not even feel)
is enough to completely destroy any SEMICONDUCTOR...

READ MORE about ESD (Electro-Static Discharge).
Incredibly important...
Electrostatic discharge

Hope this helps... If it does NOT ... Comment me back
(we can do this... It is a pretty cool Sunfire)

SOURCE: all dash lights on

Many times, When electrics act up. it has to do with a ground problem. Fuses must be good you have power. Auto electrics like to have a single wire running to the device and then depend on a ground near by to grounded steel instead of a return wire. Loose grounds have no return and the device acts crazy and will be erratic, and not act properly. No where for the electricity to go. Eliminate the possibility of bad or missing grounds first, then get out an electric volt ohm meter, Start checking voltage, and eliminating things that have proper and constant voltage. Then look for bad devices. Just trying to save you some money. Electrical Trouble shooting can be time consuming and expensive. You can do it. lbreen

SOURCE: 2005 sunfire gauges all wacked out

All these gauges are controlled by a fuse, start there first, if they are blow just replace them, you should find all necessary info in your manual that came with the car when you bought it new.

SOURCE: I have a 1999 Pontiac

usually a ground that goes to the battery pan... usually the battery pan is rusted beyond repair. Easy repair is removing the ground, then going from the ground part of the battery to a bolt on the fender. That usually clears this up.

2007 Crysler 300 pulled in to get gas turned car off. now car won't start. got a jump car started. took it to auto zone. he said battery fine alternater was at 14 it was fine. gauges going haywi

The alternator may be charging at 14v but if the battery cannot hold charge, then a low voltage issue may be present. If a jumpt start worked to get the vehicle going, then I'm assuming your battery is close to dead.

Dashboard lights and gauges go out, windows won't work

Your alternator is out. Those are classic symptoms of alternating going out. The alternator recharges your electrical system and when it goes out a list of strange things go on inside the dash, and you won't be able to go very far on just a battery. I'm glad you at least made it home. But yes you will need a new alternator for sure. Please rate this response so I can get my ratings back up to 90% at least.

The car was running fine one day then the next day it would not start. We tried jumping it thinking the battery might be dead and it still would niot start. The car has power until we take the jumper...

Sounds like you have a toasted battery or alternator. Have you performed a load test on the battery? Have you tried to charge the battery? First remove the battery and charge it externally from the vehicle. If the battery won't hold a charge, or won't hold a charge of 12 volts, replace it. Once you have the vehicle started, test the operation of the alternator. It should be putting out at least 13 volts back to the battery to keep it charged - if it is putting less than 13 volts or more than 16 volts, replace the alternator.

It sounds like the vehicle has stopped charging the battery.Charge your new battery first and see if it starts,or put a volt meter across the 2 teminals and read the voltage ,if it is below 10.6 volts the powertrain control module and the transmission control module will nt funtion due to low voltage. The alternator has an external regulator located in the powertrain control module, which regulates the voltage at 13.6 volts. If this is the case you need to test the alternator. You can take it off and take it to an auto parts store(they will test it at no charge),or you can get a scanner and full field the unit.Start there and let me know because the underhood fuse panel(pdc)could also cause problems.thank you Ramundoo

Instrument panel went dead

Checked Every fuse in the fuse box (no small task). This includes #4 - Power point Instrument Panel, #14 - Day time running lamps (auto lamps doesn't work nor does auto lock), #27 - ignition switch run feed, #35 - Instrument Cluster, #41 - Instrument Cluster, #42 - Delayed Accessory, #45 - Ignition switch run/start feed, #102 - Door locks body security module, #103 - Ignition switch, #110 - Ignition switch, & #116 - Ignition switch. But I also check all other ones as well, they all register OK. AC panel & radio work. Turn signals work. Mileage does not work, trip computer does. So, basically, everything works except auto head-lights, auto locks, and the dash cluster (no MPH, RPM, mileage display, Fuel, Temp, Tran Temp, and Oil Pressure).

Dead battery or starter?

Take the battery out and have it charged up. reinstall it and you should be allright. Your car has discharged it completely, and it will need a recharge to start. The gauge is only measuring voltage, and not the status of charge.

Need to recharge the battery, fully, start the car,and check the charging voltage at the battery with a voltmeter, to verify that the alternator is charging the battery properly. If the alternator isn't working (charging) then the battery will go dead again.Charging voltage at the battery with the engine running should be minimum 13.5 volts up to about 14.5 volts.Battery voltage with the engine off should be minimum 12.5 volts.
