I assume that "power seemed normal" means that you can get engine to turn over, but not start.
possible problems: clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, water or other impurities in gasoline, foreign matter in gas tank, faulty "electronic distributor", possible blockage of adequate air supply, broken timing chain.
if i were to have to guess, it would be the timing chain, especially if car was running well prior to this problem.

The check engine light is for emission related concerns. I does not have anything to do with maintance items. Such as oil changes.

I am no expert, but I just had a similar problem. The car would shake and buck when accelerating. It finally just died and would not start. After sitting for some time, the car would start and run a while, then do the same thing. I thought fuel pump. The dealer diagnosed distributor. After replacing, the car is running perfect. Something to think about. Good luck.
