1998 sebring v6 2.5 convertible

Ran fine for a while recently we were driving and the radio stopped working. about 1 minute later the car stalled hard and came back on and the radio was working. wehn we were pulling away from a stoplight the car was dying and staying on repeatedly acouple minutes later we were driving and it stalled and shut off. it wouldnt start after that happened. after getting it towed i hooked up a batterry charger for a day then next day it started fine thought it was the alternator but took it to autozone and said it was good any thoughts onto what it could be?

Auto Zone does not test the alternator under full load so the test result could be borderline.
start the car and turn everything on. If the voltage drops lower than 14.2
replace the alternator.
also the battery could be being drained overnight. to check use a test light by removing a battery terminal and connecting light between battery and cable with car off.
if it lights start be removing fuses.
when the light goes off the problem is with this circuit.
lastly if the light stays on take the wires off the alternator.
if the light goes out replace alternator.

SOURCE: CAR WON'T START. NOT BATTERY. CHANGED FUSE AND RAN

There are way too many possibilities for us to try to start to diagnose your car. . Id check all fuses and fusible links if I were you., Body shops often jump start cars that are in their shops for long periods of time, Jump starting can cause alot of issues.

SOURCE: check guages light comes on after short drive

It sounds like the Alternator is actually bad.
One great way to determine this:
Recharge the new battery with a trickle charge overnight. Make sure use remove the wires going to the Battery before recharging.
Replace the Battery Wires.
Get the Vehicle Started.
When it has Started: Leave it Running and Disconnect and Remove the Negative side of the Battery. If the Vehicle dies, it is the Alternator that is bad, and needs to be replaced..
The Battery starts that vehicle, and provides nominal power to certain accessories. The Alternator actual Runs the Engine and Recharges the Battery with a low trickled charge.

SOURCE: After driving about 10 miles

  • There could be a couple of things going on here.
  1. The first thing you want to do is check all the cable wires both positive and negative to make sure you are getting a good connection. Check the battery wires and the clamps as well as the starter and alternator wires. Them cables can rot under the insulation and you would never know if you did not inspect them real well. Look for negated wiring insulation that will make the wires short.
  • Flat out the reason your car is dying is because the alternator is failing. When the alternator fails then the battery starts to be drained. When the battery runs out of deliverable Amps there is nothing left to run the vehicle and it dies. If the alternator does not spin to send a charge to the battery then both will fail The battery has one function and that is to start the vehicle via the starter, that's it, the alternator does the rest. The reason you have to jump start the battery every time is because the battery is the only thing running the vehicle but the battery alone won't last but a minute or two and then will die again.
  1. I'd like you to also look under the hood while the vehicle is running and tell me do you see the pulley on the alternator turning properly? Or is it hung up or not turning at all? Make sure it is not some other pulley preventing the pulley from turning.
  • I don't know how the alternator was "benched tested." the way an alternator is checked a couple real good ways.
  1. One of the sure ways to test the alternator is to start the vehicle and then pull the positive cable off the battery. If the vehicle starts running then the alternator is good. If not then it is shoot.
  2. Another way is to get a Volt meter and put it on the leads on the connections of the alternator and read the Volts both before and after turning the key. If you turn the key and the volts drop of go below 12 Volts this too is a sign of a bad alternator.

  • As a recap here what needs to be done.
  1. Check the wiring and connections real good. Check all the big cables under the hood too.
  2. Check the rotation of the alternator pulley when it is spinning to make sure it freely turns.
  3. Test the alternator for Amps and remove positive battery cable to see if vehicle still runs.
  4. Remember the battery is taking a heavy hit with all the "jumping" and dying so you will more that likely need a new battery after you see get the alternator issue cleared up.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa,

07 Chrysler Sebring still not running right after replacing catalytic converter... please help a gal out!

Stop using it,the flashing light is a Class A converter ruining
misifire,so nothing was fixed so far

Sounds like you have cylinder misfires that ruined the
converter & only the converter was replaced.

The last thing you do, is the converter, AFTER you diagnose the systems to find out why it failed

Car alarm preventing car from starting

Try removing the alarm system relay, some car alarm has also a fuse on the alarm that you can remove.
Many car alarms unlock by inserting and turning car key while you connect the battery.

Car dies intermittently

THIS ONE IS EASY. CHECK YOUR BATTERY TERMINALS AND CABLES THAT THEY ARE TIGHT. IF THEY ARE, YOUR BATTERY MAY NEED CHARGING OR YOUR ALTERNATOR IS NOT CHARGING YOUR SYSTEM THAT WELL. I WOULDNT DRIVE LONG DISTANCES UNLESS I HAD THAT CHECKED.
