I got an oil change awhile back and ever since my car has been smoking. To the best of my knowledge it is white smoke....Its not black, for sure. I burn tons of oil and my exhaust has oil all along the outside. Im not losing coolant and to the best of my knowledge there is not oil in the coolant. I have smelled my oil and I smell a slightly gassy smell, but guys, I am brand new to all of this. I have replaced my own thermostat, radiator, a few hoses, and the alternator....but that is it. I am wanting to learn.
From what I understand, Bad rings? Blown head gasket? No overheating though.
There also has been something a bit strange that has developed. When I step on my brakes and I have the heater running. The airflow automaticly goes from normal to very low air flow. As soon as I let off the pedal, the air flow is back to normal. Anyone have any directions to point me in?
Im a single mom and I cant afford to take it to a mechanic. Thanks.

Sounds expensive. Blue smoke usually means oil in the combustion chambers, from worn out rings. Anti-freeze inside means leaking hoses or heater core. Not sure where the driver-side tire comes into this, unless that is where the smoke is coming from, in which case that likely a problem with a seized brake caliper.
definitely an oil consumption problem. How many miles? Could be worn rings and or valve guides. The oil light on when hot indicates low level or possible or weak oil pump. Check compression for possible head gasket or cracked head. I wouldn't drive it untill diagnosed.
white smoke is a water leak on the cyl head , blue smoke is burning oil , black smoke is over fuel or a blokage in air intake or exhaust ! is it smelling ike steam or oil or fuel out of the exhaust ?
You don't mention what that smell is reminiscent of?
You don't mention the colour of the "smoke" and you didn't say whether the engine is petrol or diesel?
You don't mention whether the road behaviour/performance is normal?
White smoke is almost always steam or in the case of a diesel it could be an unburned fuel mist, grey/black is excess fuel and blue or grey/blue is burning oil.
Some steam is fairly normal until the engine and exhaust system is hot but excessive amounts could be one symptom of head gasket trouble. If the engine is drinking coolant and sending it through the exhaust as steam it will sometimes smell spicy.
Burning oil smells a bit like burned eggs in the frying pan.
If the car hasn't ultra-low sulphur oil and fuel the catalytic converter will convert sulphur traces into hydrogen sulphide - the bad egg gas...
having a blue smoke no white with a lot oil consumption, means that you have a problem with either valve stem seals got hard and can not hold oil getting in the combustion chamber through the valves.Or your engine bores are worn due to long mileage if you have and the piston rings are not strong enough to hold oil below piston rings in the oil pan. or your piston rings or piston channels broken and oil goes into combustion chamber and burnt through the exhaust system. What you have too do? visit a qualified workshop for a correct inspection and decision taken.Good luck.
The injectors have o-rings that will wear and cause fuel leak into engine and cause same smoke problem ,but glow plugs are only for engine firing.........you can change o-rings only but if it has lot of miles i would do injectors...
however make sure the fuel rail isnt leaking at injector connection.also check exhaust for excessive heat or noise inside cat.converter if you can shake it.....some come apart inside.....
it would be worth having the engine scanned to make sure 02 sensors are good..they control air/fuel mix and if oxygen level is incorrect it will burn more fuel and sometimes fuel scent but not very bad.
black smoke when driving.(not slowing down)is an indication that the rings are shot.(engine rebuild)exhaust will smell of oil.black smoke on deceleration indicates valves stems worn.(head rebuild)
I have a 1989 chevy silverado. my dad bought it new and never drove it. he wanted to pay it off first. after 5 years it had 15K miles on it. it then smoked everytime he cranked it after it had sit a while. The lack of driving it caused the rubber valve seals to dry rot. so now when it sits, oil seeps down between the valve and the seal and enters the piston chamber. when he cranks it, a poof of blue smoke blows out the exhaust but quickly disappears after the the initial poof of smoke.
this may be your problem also if you have abnormally low milage on the vehicle
if it's a 2001 model it is fuel injected which means it doesn't have a carby. the white grey smoke is burning oil which means you might want to keep an eye on you're oil level but the strong smell of fuel and lack of acceleration could be caused by a fuel leak somewhere
