One of those bars come out of its bracket ( on my 89 cougar)
none of the local shops would touch it, no even the body shops.
so i just connect one end to the lid, like normal, then with a pry bar, pryed out the other end and put in a small block of wood (two by four) then released the pry bar. took another bite pryed it out again then added another block until i got the desired spring back into the torsion rod. yes that's (jury rigged) but my trunk works almost like it should. if you need i can send you a picture of what i did.

How to install the trunk lid torsion bars on a 2007 Saturn Ion?

The procedure is the same on every vehicle that uses this type of opening assist. So here is another persons instructions on a GM product.
Tools used:
Leather gloves!!
3/4" combo wrench (biggest I had)
1/2" deep socket (3/8")
6" extension (3/8")

1.With the trunk lid up and the curved part of the torsion bar against the rear trunk wall, I slipped the box end of the combo wrench around the torsion bar. I don't remember which way I had the angle of the box end facing. Just use what will work.

2.Then use the extension and the socket on the end of the torsion bar and push back so that you can get the combo wrench down past the curve, this is key. Once that is done you can remove the socket and extension. Pressure will push the wrench against the rear trunk wall.

3.Now comes the fun part. Push the wrench forward (VERY CAREFULLY) all the way past the side engine grill support and onto the peg of the hinge. The tip of my torsion bar just nicked the grill support. Make sure the wrench is seated well because it could slip around on you and cause your paint some damage and maybe even you.

4.Now that the torsion bar is on the hinge peg, you'll notice that your left with a wrench stuck on the bar... Just move (wiggle, twist) the wrench as far to the end of the torsion bar as it will go.

5.Take the extension, without the socket and place over the tip of the torsion bar. Push down while you slip the wrench past the peg. Remove the extension and slip off the wrench.

6.Now use the extension again to push down and put the roller (plastic, metal) bearing onto the peg.

7.Secure all the bolts, and lube it up.

That's it. Hope it'll help someone else. Please be careful.

Trunk torsion rod instalation 2004 chevy cavalier

This is rather hard to describe in words with out a picture. But here goes...

With the trunk lid propt safely open and the hinges in place, place one torsion bar in position so the end with the "U" end is by the hinge. The hinge has a link on it with a hook. The hook connects to the "U". Once connected, do the other hinge/bar. Last step is to place tension on the bars by postitioning the "L" end in one of the slots. You may need to do a trial-by-error in the different slots to acheive correct tension to keep the lid in the open position

How to install trunk lid torsion bar on 2008 Honda Accord sedan

most torsion bars ure under the least tension when fully open and have one bar facing right and one left
insert the fixed end in the bracket then with a suitable tool twist the end of the bar down as you put it in the hinge bracket repeat for the opposite bar
It is not easy until you get the idea as to how to twist the bar as you put it in place

See here p55. You will need to cobble up a tool which hooks on the bar, somehow.

How to remove and replace trunk torsion bars?

Toyota refers to a special tool, see here p55

You can see how it works. I think an effective substitute could be mad from a length of hardwood with a dowel rod through it at right angles

How to install trunk lid torsion bars

I have a 2006 Saturn Ion. There are two torque bars in the trunk. One has the insulation on it and the other comes without insulation. Using a bungee cord, I hooked one end above my license plate in a gap and the other end I just stretched until it reached my back door and I shut the door on it. That is how I held the trunk up. Next, I took the rod without the insulation and put the rounded loop part of the bar to the right of the trunk. I rested the other end of the bar that has the squared loop in the middle slit toward the left side of the trunk. I then used one hand to lower the trunk a little to get the right end in place easier. There is the very end of the bar on the right side of the trunk that goes in the slit on the roof of the trunk, the rounded loop that goes under that hook on the bar of the trunk, and just to the left of that loop where the rounded part becomes straight again that goes on the upper most slit just under the roof of the trunk. After all that is in place, go to the left side of the trunk near the three slits and push up as hard as you can to get the left part of the bar to rest on the lower slit and then you\'re snapped in. Repeat for the piece with the insulation on it but reverse what I said about right and left side. You have to install the pieces in that particular order or it won\'t work out. You might say Jesus Christ a few times too but have patience. It is worth it.
