Bought 4-cyl S-10 thinking I needed to change transmission, but was told that I simply wasnt getting voltage to trans and my transmission was fine. Said there is some sort of relay or something that also controled voltage to fuel pump. Have an unidentified gurgling sound from under hood and wont shift properly when in drive. It also skips reverse on dash indicator and i have to come back to it so the indicator is off. I have been having the truck for 6 months and really need it on the road. Swapping the trans would have been a cakewalk but this elec. problem is prolly a simple fix but a nightmare to me. Anyone have any advice, was told check relay for trans...cant find. Found trans fuse its good tho.
First have the fault codes read--that saves a lot of cash and heart ache
next buy a workshop manual as that will show you where all the bits are that are from the fault codes
the codes found will indicate were the problem is
could be in the wires , servo/ solenoids or TCM
if there is nothing mechanical wrong with the transmission ( you haven't mention any problems ) then changing the transmission is a waste of time
knowing that it is a GM product and GM does not agree to transmission oil changes ( sealed transmissions) it is probably just dirty oil so a service could be the answer to your problems

Hello Johnholley
I am wondering do you hear the fuel pump when you just turn the key into the on run position not crank just in run and listen and see if you hear the fuel pump run for a second, If you don't hear it you will want to check for power at the fuel tank, and have some one cycle the key while your under the truck with a test light. Hopefully you have power and you hear the fuel pump run. Now if you do hear the fuel pump running then the next thing you will want to check is for spark, It could be the ignition module or pickup coil. check out those thing and I am sure you will be able to figure out whats going on. If you don't get back to me and we can try a few other methods. I sure hope that helps you out johnholley. and thanks for using Fix Ya Bear001

First as ABS goes. The abs light will come on for a number of things. The sensor is ajar. The sensor failed or they aren't wired.
secondly the whole ABS unit might be bad. Getting the ABS mo dual is very expensive and to honest you don't need ABS. all ABS does is replace driving skills you should have all ready. on my blazer i have it disconnected because i felt it was more dangerous then old fashioned breaks. Also when your bake pads are shot this could also trip the sensor. As far as the transmission goes there is a sending unit that reads the information and relays it back to the instrument cluster. He could of very well not wired it correctly or at all.

If you have no reverse then yes it needs to be rebuilt. as far as the whining it could be in one of the differentials. or in trans? just depends on where you hear it

If you like go ahead and let someone sell and replace your transmission but here is my suggestion! Check around and see if you can find a minor vacuum leak! This can simply be the big round hose that goes from the fuel injection to the power brake hub! This is normally a push in connector which has about a 1/2 inch hose clamped on it! If there is any kink or the connector is not in correctly a leak will occur and the transmission will shift rough as though you will be thrown out of the vehicle! Try unplugging this connector and plug it back in hard and straight and maybe you will be lucky and fix your problem. If the vacuum is correct your transmission will shift better than you have ever experienced!
