I have a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder, Automatic. I am having a problem with my car where when I crank up my car, sometimes the dash lights begin to flicker and I hear a ticking sound, and after a few seconds I'm left with a very dim BRAKE and BATTERY light on the dash. I'll then start to drive it when it is like that and it feels like there is very little power behind it when it is like that (also my heater doesn't work when it is like this). After driving it a ways, most of the time it will go back to normal and everything will work fine. Sometimes though I'll make it to where I am going and it still has those dim lights on. This doesn't happen every time though and it will crank right up. My car has a new battery, new battery terminals, and a fairly new starter. This problem has been happening for a few months and it feels like it is getting worse. I would really like to know why my car is doing this. My mechanic couldn't figure it out. The only thing he said is that it "MIGHT" be a "sillanoid(?)"
There is 2 solutions which i can give you, the first is weak or rusted body grounds on the van coming from the negitive side of the battery cables. The second one is if you're altenator needs brushes as you say the battery light will stay on and weak lights or flickering lights on dash. ask your mechanice to clean the grounds straps and make sure he has clean body grounds on the van especially where the the terminals are connected
-Start the car and let it run for couple minutes to normal temperature, then check the voltage at battery terminal.
-If less than 13 volts ,the alternator is bad. Replace it.

GET YOUR BATTERY LOAD TESTED ALONG WITH YOUR ALTERNATOR TESTED FOR OHMS VALUES AT THE REGULATOR. ALSO MEASURE THE VOLTAGE WITH ALL LIGHTS, AC, RADIO ON. SHOULD BE THE SAME AS BATTERY OUTPUT.

First off - 125K mi is nothing on that car (as long as you maintain it). The alternator is actually also the voltage regulator and this aspect of the alternator frequently fails before the actual alternator itself does and causes irregular voltage - so it makes sense you drove without the battery connected but you probably were having irregular power instead of a nice steady 14V (the other thing to know is that even if they do show 14V all the time the amperage may differ, both problems = change the alternator).

Sounds like a bad wire somewhere. I dont know with your particular vehicle, but some vechiles wiring leads into eachother for alot of things. If a wire is being grounded out this could cause the loss of the electrical units connected on the wire. Just a guess, but I would check with a mechanic to find out if there are electronics in your vehicle that work off of eachother. Explain what things come off and on when you lose the power to what you listed. You use the word random, so my guess would most likely be a wire being grounded out somewhere to cause this. Hope this helps!!
