Get a can of Seafoam and run through a vacuum nipple on the intake Raise the RPM's while you do this. It'll clean out the inside of the engine pretty good. You'll need a vacuum hose from the Seafoam to the intake. The can should have instructions on this procedure on the side of the can. I use this in our shop alot.

You can try running Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner. Add it to less than 1/4 tank even though the bottle says full tank. This will clean the injectors and the comprssion chamber. May have to do this a few times. I get mine at Kmart. Good luck.

Other way is carbon blaster machine using walnut shells. Some shops have this system. Ford dealers have them.

What would cause insufficient flow to my egr valve? (i just replaced it)

ok , the valve is easy to test and clean but is only 10% of the path.

my bark test works.
i remove the EGR valve see 2 ports there. (twin holes)
one is vacuum side, (intake) the other is exh. side.
i plug the vacuum side, and start engine
this is what i call the bark test. if the exh port barks load ,it may be good. if dead, or weak, it is, fix that now. clean path.
if that works ok , i then check the vacuum path port of carbon blockage. i rod it out with a flex cable.ask
the electric side test are below.

see 253mb file here

that is the FSM. burn it to cd, and run the setup'

1998 Accord EX V6 engine light on / put it on the computer, which said EGR valve was bad / bought new EGR valve for @$160.00 and swapped it out myself plus disconnected battery for 15-30 minutes to reset...

Check the EGR vacuum regulator and make sure you have battery voltage to the solenoid. If voltage is present then check the regulator resistance. To check resistance you need to remove the wiring harness and using an ohm meter make sure that it is within your vehicles specifications. You can also try testing the vehicles Differential Pressure Feedback Sensor.

The egr valve casing has carbon and needs to be cleaned out, it also has no vacuum

you can try removing it and cleaning it out with an intake/carb cleaner and hope that does the trick-if it has no vacuum whatsoever you may end up having to replace it

Idol to high

Try cleaning the throttle body, especially around the butterfly pivot pin, and the area where the butterfly sits in closed position. Over time, these areas are bad about carbon build-up. Once carbon gets built up, the butter fly can't completely close, which causes the throttle to still be open a little. This can cause higher idol (rpms). Very simple process. Buy throttle body cleaner for $6, remove your air intake hose from the intake. open your throttle and you're see the butterfly open and close. Spray the inside of intake, butterfly. You're see a lot of black carbon run out. wipe clean with a clean cloth. Repeat 2 more times until you don't see carbon running out. Put your intake hose back on, and you may have to turn the engine over a few times to dry the cleaner out. It's gonna sound like it don't want to start, but once the cleaner is dry, it will start and hopefully, this will solve your problem. Also, look at your throttle cable for any hoses, wire or anything to prevent the cable from closing the throttle.

Computer not recognizing new oxy sensors and gas cap

On your way back to test put it in second or third gear and floor it probably needs a good clean out. Had one failed the smoke test myself a few years ago the man in the test center put it in 1st gear and floored it for about 10 min's around the yard. When it failed the test I told him I couldnt understand the fail as I never drove it hard or abused it in any way. He told me I was abusing it as it needs a good clean out. Worth a try as it work's for me all the time.

1986 Honda Accord DX - too high idle on cold start

1986-1989 Honda Accord with Carburetor have a very bad habit that is little known even by most mechanics but easily fixed at home. The vacuum port on the choke opener that is connected to the intake manifold and both vacuum ports on the fast idle unloader get plugged up with nasty hard carbon almost as hard as metal. When this happens the choke sticks closed and the idle sticks on fast idle when the engine is cold and nobody can figure out why. All you have to do is attach a small drill bit to the end of a flexible socket-driver extension and put it in a variable speed drill that will let you run it real slow and carefully drill out the vacuum ports that are plugged. After they are nice and clean use a vacuum pump tester to make sure the choke opener and fast idle unloader are working before putting it all back together. It's amazing how much better the car runs after cleaning out those ports.
